5 STEPS TO GREATER EXALTATION
This week the Church celebrates the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Humanity was made to exalt—our hearts are wired to lift something high. The question is not if we exalt, but what. Some exalt comfort, others popularity, or fleeting pleasure. Yet what we exalt, we become. The Cross reveals the only worthy object of exaltation: God’s self-giving love poured out in Jesus Christ.
Here are five steps that help us evaluate our hearts and reorient our lives to exalt what is eternal:
1. Exalt Love Over Comfort: Malphas whispers that God’s will should never cost us. But the Cross teaches that real love is sacrificial. St. John Paul II reminds us: “Love is never defeated.”
2. Exalt Truth Over Popularity: In a culture of shifting opinions, we are tempted to stay silent. But conscience demands courage. St. Thomas More chose death rather than betray truth: “I die the King’s faithful servant, but God’s first.”
3. Exalt Mercy Over Resentment: Bitterness eats us alive. Mercy frees. St. Maria Goretti forgave her murderer, praying he might join her in heaven. The Cross always chooses mercy.
4. Exalt Witness Over Silence: Faith hidden is faith stunted. When Christ is lifted up, He draws all people. St. Paul’s cry still rings: “Woe to me if I do not preach the Gospel!”
5. Exalt Eternity Over the Present Moment: The world tempts us to live only for now. But the Cross points upward. St. Ignatius of Loyola reminds us we are created to “praise, reverence, and serve God… and save our soul.”
The Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross calls us to ask: What am I exalting? Comfort, recognition, resentment, silence, or fleeting pleasure? Or the Cross of Christ—the only exaltation that heals, saves, and makes us whole?
Be refreshed. Be challenged. Be transformed. |
