| 5 KEYS TO LIVING GRATITUDE
We began this week’s episode sharing moments of gratitude. The Gospel reminds us: ten were healed, but only one was saved. Gratitude is not a mere reaction; it’s a reorientation of the heart that turns healing into communion.
Indicators We Need This If we’re experiencing any of the following in our homes or hearts, it may be time to pause—and let gratitude lead us to deeper healing:
- Feeling spiritually numb even while doing “all the right things.”
- Complaining or comparing more than rejoicing.
- Forgetting to thank God after answered prayers or blessings.
- Focusing more on what’s missing than on what’s been given.
- Feeling distance in family relationships and loss of joy in worship.
1. Gratitude Begins with Awareness Malphas Memo: “Keep them rushing. Let them scroll, consume, and complain. If they never stop to notice grace, they’ll never give thanks.”
Modern neuroscience confirms what saints long knew: gratitude rewires the brain toward joy (Harvard Health, 2021). St. Ignatius taught the daily Examen for this very reason—to see God’s hand in all things.
Thought Experiment: Think of one ordinary day this week. Replay it slowly. How many unnoticed miracles—breath, laughter, light—did you miss?
2. Gratitude Heals the Deeper Wound Malphas Memo: “Let them think healing means the absence of pain. Never let them see that ungrateful hearts remain sick.”
Gratitude transforms wounds into worship. Studies show it increases empathy and reduces resentment (Emmons & McCullough, 2019). St. Thérèse knew: “Everything is grace.”
Thought Experiment: Recall a painful memory. What if, instead of resenting it, you thanked God for being there—turning pain into intimacy?
3. Gratitude Turns Receiving into Relationship Malphas Memo: “Convince them faith is about getting. If they see God as a vending machine, they’ll never kneel in love.”
Expressing gratitude directly to another person increases happiness by 25% (UC Berkeley, 2018). Gratitude transforms the transaction of faith into the tenderness of friendship.
Thought Experiment: Imagine God gave you everything you asked for—but never spoke again. Would that be enough?
4. Gratitude Restores Vision Malphas Memo: “Keep their eyes on what’s missing. Let them measure life by what they lack.”
Social comparison is a leading cause of discontent (APA, 2020). Gratitude shifts our gaze from scarcity to abundance. St. Francis said, “A single sunbeam is enough to drive away many shadows.”
Thought Experiment: Picture one area of disappointment. What if you asked, “Lord, where are You already blessing me here?”
5. Gratitude Is Missionary Malphas Memo: “Let them keep it private. Gratitude locked inside never multiplies.”
Public gratitude builds trust and transforms culture (Greater Good Science Center, 2021). When we thank others, we preach the Gospel without words.
Thought Experiment: Picture someone far from faith. What if your visible joy—your gratitude—was their first glimpse of God’s goodness?
Gratitude is the posture of salvation. Ten were healed; one returned—and that one was made whole. This week, may we, too, return again and again to the Giver, turning every moment of mercy into worship, every blessing into mission, and every home into an altar of thanksgiving.

TOLD THE STORY... NEARLY TWO YEARS AGO I WROTE THIS BOOK nearly a year before President Trump was elected. ONLY IN RECENT WEEKS have I been moved by the most consequential discovery of all: my protagonist. Willie. Charlie. In the heart of the public square when everything is going south. Courageously speaking truth in love. One who ignites revolution. In the only way one can. If it weren’t for a single woke-wounded review, the book would be rated 4.9/5.
