Author Talk/ Book Signing with F. Mark Granato
Wethersfield author, F. Mark Granato, will be visiting the Berlin-Peck Memorial Library this Saturday, November 14, at 1 pm. Mr. Granato’s latest historical fiction novel uses the events of the 1961 fatal fire at Hartford Hospital as the basis for a story of wrongdoing and conspiracy.

The cause of the fire that ripped through the 9th floor of Hartford Hospital on Dec. 8, 1961, killing 16 people and prompting changes in hospital safety procedures and building codes, was never officially determined. Investigators suspected that it was a cigarette carelessly tossed into a trash chute that ran from the top of the hospital to its basement. There had been several fires in the chutes through the years.

The ferocious fire that might have grown from that smoldering cigarette butt killed a young doctor, hospital staff and patients. If not for the heroism of hospital staff and Hartford firefighters, the death toll might have gone higher.

In "Out Of Reach: The Day Hartford Hospital Burned," Mr. Granato takes a turn toward fiction, suggesting a more sinister motive. Rather than an errant cigarette butt, "Out Of Reach" posits that the fire was intentional.

"There was always a certain element out there that thought it was a conspiracy and arson," he said.

Copies of “Out of Reach: The Day Hartford Hospital Burned” are on sale now at the library. Books will also be sold and signed during the event. You can register online by clicking link below or by calling the Library at 860-828-7126.
