This War Will Claim More Lives through Hunger in Africa than Violence in Ukraine

IFDC's Fertilizer Research and Responsible Implementation (FERARI) Program Leader, Dr. Prem Bindraban recently published an opinion piece discussing the effects COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine conflict will have on global food security, especially in Africa. Current predictions estimate that Africa's food production could fall by one-third in 2022 due to reduced fertilizer imports.

More than 25% of the people on the African continent are already facing food insecurity; therefore, increased commitments to Africa's agricultural development are urgently needed. From governments to civil society, long-term investments in Africa's land and water management could prevent major production losses attributed to skyrocketing commodity prices and the scarcity of fertilizer.
