IFDC Projects Catalyze Seed Systems Development in East Africa and the Sahel

From the Sahel Region to East Africa, IFDC is using an innovative, private sector-led approach to make locally adaptive quality seeds accessible to smallholder farmers across the African continent.

Over 500,000 African farmers are benefiting from IFDC's seed projects, which include ISSD/Sahel in Mali and Niger, A3-SEED in South Sudan, and PSSD in Burundi.

June Project Feature: A3-SEED

Funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Juba, the Accelerating Agriculture and Agribusiness in South Sudan for Enhanced Economic Development (A3-SEED) project aims to provide market-oriented interventions to move from humanitarian support to a commercial, sustainable, and adaptive seed sector.

Seeds for Sustainable Development

The PSSD project promotes high-quality seeds for good harvests

In Burundi, the PSSD project works with private and public sector partners to promote the development of a private sector-led seed industry that is able to provide farmers with sustainable access to high-quality seed and agricultural advisory services.

Improved seed sector ‘leaves no one behind’ in South Sudan

The seed sector directly influences three aspects of food security: food availability, access, and stability. A3-SEED improves farmers' sustainable access to high-quality planting materials and knowledge of good agricultural practices, which are crucial to improving food security.

ISSD/Sahel releases national seed roadmap for Mali

The Feuille de Route Nationale Semencière (FdRNS) for Mali is a strategic document that guides the seed sector to work towards improving farmers' access to and use of quality seeds.

New roadmap to guide seed sector development in Niger

The FdRNS for Niger can be used to guide collaboration between the government, seed sector actors, and development partners for the establishment of a harmonized, structured seed sector.
