A Focus on Market Systems Development at IFDC

To overcome obstacles, such as gender inequality, limited access to quality inputs, and poor financing options, the 2SCALE program introduced the Market Systems Development (MSD) approach, which aims to bring inputs closer to small-scale producers.

The MSD approach includes the supply of inputs and coaching services that contribute to formalizing and regulating production standards.

2SCALE intends to work on introducing more innovative MSD solutions within its strategic partnerships to continue improving small-scale producers' access to local markets.

February's Featured Project: HortiNigeria

Funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Nigeria, the HortiNigeria program (2021-2025) aims to facilitate the development of a sustainable and inclusive horticulture sector that contributes to food and nutrition security in Nigeria. The project also works to contribute to smallholder farmers' empowerment within the market.

Knowledge-Sharing and Climate-Smart Action for Improved Farmer Livelihoods!

The HortiNigeria program‘s sensitization campaign, which supported over 23 female smallholder farmers in the Sokoto and Kaduna states of Nigeria, offered training on fertilizer application, crop-specific fertilizer blends, and how to achieve optimum crop yields.

Two Complementary Products, One Goal: Joint Market Activation Yields Results in Ghana

For the 2SCALE program, providing

base-of-the-pyramid (BoP) consumers with access to affordable, nutritious food is a key priority. 2SCALE uses market activations to build awareness and ensure that high-quality and healthy products reach BoP consumers.

BEAM Exchange: Responding to Market Contexts is Key to MSD

As we continue our MSD journey, we are learning that good facilitation must respond to market contexts to be effective. This lesson is even more critical now that MSD must step up to fight climate change, support recovery from disaster, and further social inclusion.

Boosting Sustainable Productivity Growth for Farmers in Mozambique

To guarantee sustainable investments in Mozambique's food and agricultural value chain, the TEAMS program helped establish input networks at the community level. The farmers have been linked to local dealers and encouraged to use improved inputs to satisfy their requirements.

Building Partnerships and Improving Market Systems

The HortiNigeria program uses a collaborative approach to address demand and supply gaps within the horticulture sector. HortiNigeria has partnered with Tomato Jos to pilot a value chain outgrower financing model.
