Recently in The Portal there’s been a bit of chatter about baby steps.
Someone shared how she’s facing something that’s really big and scary for her and she's loving herself by just taking baby steps.
Then other people commented on how calming they find it to remember to take baby steps.
And others said, 'thank you for the reminder' and 'It feels kind to tell myself I just need to take baby steps.'
So what are baby steps?
Yesterday I received this email
'Hi Eilat, I’m really challenged by the food theme this month and increasingly realising how close to home this is for me.'
And maybe because the chat from The Portal was fresh in my mind, part of my response was this.
"Take baby steps."
But as I wrote it, I wondered to myself, what are baby steps actually?
And then I thought of how babies actually learn to walk and I added,
"Babies fall down a lot you know - when they're learning to walk."
We usually talk about baby steps as being little steps you take towards a bigger goal, but I think the concept has to include the possibility that we will fall down a lot...
and lose our balance,
fall over,
tumble,
land on our bums and cry,
as we are learning to walk in this new way.
Or in this new direction.
So when things are tough...
Or the challenge feels too big...
And you find yourself losing your balance, eating that thing you said you wouldn't eat, shouting at your child again, not exercising, feeling depressed and not managing to pull yourself out of it...
It's ok.
Baby steps.
Fall down, let yourself cry, soothe yourself, take a breath and then get up and try again.
Take baby steps.
You'll get there.
If food and eating are your challenge, then this month in The Portal we are all focusing on How to Love Yourself in Food and Eating.
