Subject: What’s in a Word

What’s in a Word?

WHAT I WAS GOING TO SAY:

While interacting with a child met once a couple years ago, I was getting ready to say, “please remind me of your name. You and your siblings have grown so much, and I’ve gotten older too, which means that my memory isn’t as good any more.”

WHAT I SAID:

“Please remind me of your name. You and your siblings have grown so much, and it’s been a long time since I’ve seen you!”

Do you see what I omitted that I almost said automatically?  I was getting ready to:

  • utter a meme… a societal programming around aging, and with each utterance it is reinforced

  • reinforce that as a given thing for myself and others, where it takes on a life of its own

  • unwittingly indoctrinate the child with that programming in the same insidious way we’ve all been influenced

Such a small thing, right? So innocent… maybe just semantics and a manner of speaking that doesn’t mean anything in the big picture.

Or does it?

The Power of Words

There are vastly more ways we are programmed and running those programs than we may ever realize. But it begins by becoming conscious about the perpetual thoughts we engage and the words we use.

That’s where reframing comes in as well as the cognitive structuring. I am consciously immersed in tremendous cognitive restructuring now. It is unnerving, powerful, wonderful and freeing. Incredibly freeing.

Transformation through creation.
