PART 5 — The Changing Landscape for Creators

An Attitude of Adventure

“We are in a New Renaissance…An awakening…A quickening of consciousness and an urge to create.”

Toward this journey of discovery, Devani has been keeping her fingers on the pulse of the creative tools that may be used by and for creators. The AI of today is fantastic!

It spans from writing to art, and from jobs lost to jobs gained, AI is creating as many or more opportunities as it is replacing, for those open to exploration, discovery and adaptation.

Example of options opening up for creators are many, and include non-fungible tokens (NFTs) as opportunities for creating and selling digital art.

Here are Devani’s observations and discoveries.

AWE and ALARM

As a student of the writing craft, I am both awed and alarmed at how good many of the AI writing tools are.

When it comes to AI art, I walk the line of appreciating the groundbreaking opportunity and pondering how it will affect artists and our work.

OPPORTUNITIES:

As I explore the opportunities these various tools provide, two things stand out:

1. Artists will be able to harness AI the best out of all of us if they choose to embrace it.

2. The cat is out of the bag, so if we don’t learn to work with it, we will get left behind.

I realize that can feel daunting, scary, and maybe even wrong given the valid concerns around rights, art theft, and market fairness.

However, these are not new concerns in the art and creative world.

NEW FORM, OLD KARMA:

Since the dawn of art we’ve been fighting against theft.  Moving in a state of fear only encourages the people with nefarious intent.

I don’t have solutions for these struggles but I am keeping my finger on the pulse of AI daily, and learning how it can be used for creative good.

I will gladly share any discoveries, solutions, tools that are built with artists in mind, and other videos / creators who are also using AI in unique ways.

Here are a few of these tools I’ve been playing with lately.

COOL TOOLS FOR CREATORS IN THE AI WORLD:

  • MidJourney:  this is by far one of the coolest visual AI tools that I have been using.  If you want to play around with fantasy art creations, MidJourney will serve the best results. Here is a beginners guide to MidJourney. And here is a fun video on crafting a prompt.

  • Dall-E: also a fun visual AI tool, and it’s much easier to just start using than MidJourney. However the art results from the prompts can often be more unpredictable. It’s still a tool that’s being developed and fine tuned so over time it might create better results.  I still enjoy using it.  You don’t really need a tutorial to use Dall-E, but here is a helpful guide on best prompt practices.

  • Copy.ai: if you are interested in generating written copy for social media posts, blog content, or just generating writing ideas in a professional capacity, Copy.ai is really cool. If you’re an artist that is struggling with generating social media captions, but you are not ready to hire someone, this could be a really cool way to have an “assistant” help you with this.  Here is their quick demo, but they also have other amazing videos on their youtube.

ChatGPT: It’s hard to write one concise paragraph of the capability of ChatGPT because it's one of the fastest growing text based AI tools on the market right now. I have been blown away by its ability to:

    • write a story plot

    • draft a travel itinerary

    • create a meal plan

    • create a budget on a spreadsheet I can paste into Google Sheets

    • write code, as my husband, Ashe, has discovered and put to use just this weekend!

So it’s pretty endless what it can do in a text capacity. Everyone from coders to writers to product managers to just the everyday person who wants to play around with AI is using ChatGPT. Here is a 2min video to help you get started!

AI INSPIRED CREATIVITY:

There are countless more tools that I have not yet tried, and there are countless more being built.

As I’ve gone through my own creative slumps, being able to use a mix of these has inspired me to dive back into my own imagination.

If anyone would like more information on any of these tools, I would be happy to write more about my experiences with them, and learn from your about yours.

But for now, I hope this brief overview sparks your interest and exploration, and subdues your concerns.

AI has inspired me to dive back into my own imagination.

We would love to hear your thoughts and experiences, and encourage you to play around with these new tools for creators. Chances are, these will stimulate your own creativity and ideas rather than stimy it.

At the very least, you will be informed and exposed to the possibilities, should there be something there for you.

Transformation through creation.
