Subject: Made You Look!

We are wired for distraction, for alarm, negativity and finding what’s wrong. That’s our hunter-gatherer biology.

However in today’s world it simply leads to stress, anxiety and overwhelm.

The ads and media are employing a new level of effort to get our attention: moving ads. Go to most any site or social platform and notice the auto-play videos and ads, all frantically vying for your attention.

We are genetically wired to notice something moving, especially in our periphery, for it could mean the difference in survival from attack.

Now however, the attack is on our attention at the expense of our focus on what matters more. The job of the media and all ads is to get your attention.

It’s hard to even read an article without the moving pictures pulling our eyes to the captivating movement.

The good that I've noticed is that a lot of times the moving images (at least the ones I’ve seen) are more often people laughing, dancing and doing fun things rather than the static title clickbait of “See what she looks like now”, and “You’ll never believe what happened to her…”, and “Major wardrobe fails”, kinds of things. NONE of these move us closer to our goals, nor add to the quality of the day, let alone the life.

You know that childhood game…?  “Made you look!”

Well, it’s not a good game to play if we want to be in control of our time and focus so that we can achieve our goals and get to the end of the day, the week, the year… the life and know that we did what we came here to do.
