Subject: Hard Stuff First

Busy work is a trap that hinders progress. We all get stuck there. The good news is that we don’t have to stay there.

For the past few days… almost a week, actually, I’ve gotten off track with my goals. Violating my own rules of creating and getting the hardest and most important tasks done the first half of the day, I’ve allowed necessary but non-essential tasks to take over my most productive morning time.

A few times I fell into a “research” hole. In one instance, I was looking for a good site on Goldie Hawn to link to for a quote by her. Often—and surprisingly—celebrities don’t have their own website because traditionally, they relied on agents and studios. But with the search results served up, I wondered about her and her life, and so kept clicking further into a distraction that had nothing to do with what I set out to do.

That time is gone. Never to be again. And… the result has nothing to do with my purpose. There’s nothing I can, or will do, with that information.

You know what happens when you don’t meet your goals for the day… or several days. You can feel out of sort with yourself, off track and off purpose.

So I’m disappointed because I [should] know better. But it’s also okay, because this feeling will fuel the lesson to help keep me on track tomorrow...in all the tomorrows. Until I derail and realign again. It may happen, but so will progress and growth.

The important takeaway here is that mistakes are inevitable. And, recoverable. If—or when—we’re off track, we learn, adjust and get right back on track.

The good news about being off track is that we don’t have to stay there.

If you have plans to turn pro, you’ll want to go deeper.

The day is the way to create the life you want to live.
