“My hatred for the enemy nearly drove me crazy. . . My thoughts turned toward what I heard about Christianity changing hatred between human beings into real brotherly love and I was gripped with a strange longing to examine the Christian’s Bible to see if I could find the secret. I begged my captors to get a Bible for me. At last, in the month of May, 1944, a guard brought me the book, but told me I could have it only for three weeks. I eagerly began to read its pages. Chapter after chapter gripped my heart.”

Captured, imprisoned, and tortured during WWII, DeShazer encountered Christ through Scripture, and the love of Jesus changed his heart from vengeance to compassion. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, he not only forgave his captors but returned to the country of Japan afterwards to proclaim salvation. Jacob showed all of us that loving our enemies is possible only because Christ first loved us when we were His enemies.

“Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you”

How can we rejoice when suffering for Christ? Richard Wurmbrand’s life answers that question with powerful clarity. Imprisoned and tortured for his faith under Communist rule, he chose to obey Christ’s command: “Rejoice and be exceedingly glad” (Matthew 5:12). His example calls us to turn toward Jesus in our trials, not away from Him. Like Wurmbrand, may we find strength to rejoice not just in ease, but also in the midst of trials because our risen Savior gives us joy amid tribulation.
