Yielding Rights: The Example of Jesus Christ

Learning from Jesus’ surrender to God

Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus Christ lived in complete obedience and surrender to God. In the Book of Philippians, we read that, although Jesus was equal with God, He humbled Himself to live among men and to redeem them from the bondage of sin.

In order to fulfill the direction of God the Father, Jesus yielded His right to wealth, to a good reputation, to be served, to enjoy physical comforts, and to make His own decisions. As we surrender ourselves to the Father, He will form these characteristics of His Son in us as well. Let’s look more closely at how Jesus yielded His personal rights.

E. M. Bounds: Power Through Prayer

E.M. Bounds not only preached about prayer—he lived it. He was well-known in his lifetime for his habit of rising at 4:00 every morning and praying alone for several hours before breakfast. His prayers were fervent, consistent, detailed, powerful, and they had a lasting influence upon the few who were privileged to hear his private prayers.

The Marriage of Charles and Susannah Spurgeon

Susannah first met Charles when he came to London to preach at New Park Street Chapel. Susannah’s family was well established in the city, and she was certainly a “city girl.” By contrast, Spurgeon was regarded as a country preacher. His strong Essex accent and his old-fashioned style suit made Susannah smile when she first saw him and heard him preach.
