“You will be eaten by cannibals!”
The concerned outburst from one concerned listener hung in the air. His alarmed response was to John Paton sharing his plans to serve as a missionary in the South Pacific islands.
Calmly, Paton replied to the gentleman, “Mr. Dickson, you are advanced in years now, and your own prospect is soon to be laid in the grave, there to be eaten by worms; I confess to you, that if I can but live and die serving and honoring the Lord Jesus, it will make no difference to me whether I am eaten by Cannibals or by worms; and in the Great Day my resurrection body will arise as fair as yours in the likeness of our risen Redeemer.”
In this Message of the Month, John Huffman recounts the remarkable story of the Scottish missionary who left his family and home to take the Gospel to the cannibal-infested islands of the New Hebrides. Dressed in period costume, John Huffman relates a first-person narrative of John G. Paton’s living through years of danger and perseverance, and his seeing God protect him and open doors of opportunity for him to share with the cannibals the Good News of Jesus.
