Subject: The Sergeants Club | June 2023

Hello,

I hope you all are having a great summer! Summer was a little slow in arriving here, but it has hit full force these last few weeks: heat, humidity, and thunderstorms. We were very fortunate to make it through the severe storms last week mostly unscathed. A line of storms Thursday night took out power for 250,000 people in East Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana, and as of this evening about 100,000 people are still without power. We are currently housing several hundred SWEPCO employees on campus, as well as residents of a nursing home that lost power. The combination of no power, and temps in the 90s, and high humidity is a real challenge for the local community, so it is nice to be able to help out and house the linemen working to restore power to the area.

I’m sure most of you are already aware of the Amazon docuseries about the Duggar family and their connection to IBLP. ALERT was featured some in the docuseries, and they used footage from our Basic Training videos as well. I don’t have any details on the accuracy of any of the Duggar/IBLP accusations in the series, but most/all of what they said about ALERT was incorrect or heavily slanted. In terms of internet traffic and blowback, it hasn’t been as bad as we were concerned that it could be, but it has still been a difficult couple of weeks for everyone here. Thankfully there hasn’t been too much hate/spam on our social media, or by phone calls or emails, but we have gotten the occasional colorful outburst (my favorite one was from someone who said that the Romans had the right idea, and they should have fed us all to the lions when they had the chance).

You can pray for Colonel Boulden and his wife Katy as they are getting the brunt of the questions from the public or our alumni, and for me as I manage all of ALERT’s social media and public inboxes. It is both exhausting and discouraging dealing with the steady drip of questions, wild accusations, and incorrect information the series stirred up. Please pray that we would respond well, and have wisdom in how and what to say to each individual who reaches out with questions. Also pray for our alumni and their families that now have to answer awkward questions about an organization that many of them have zero involvement or history with. One other way that you could help is by giving us reviews on Google and/or Facebook, or answering questions that people ask on Google. Thankfully our reviews haven’t been aggressively attacked as a result of the series, but there have been several negative reviews left by strangers.

In the midst of all the drama online, it has been really encouraging to hear from alumni and their parents who appreciate the ALERT program and the impact that it has had in their lives and the lives of their families. Any impact ALERT has had is only by the grace of God, and we are in constant need of His grace and His wisdom as we seek to disciple the men and point them to Christ. Please pray that we would show Christ faithfully, truthfully, and continually, and that our character and conduct would be irreproachable.

Our short summer furlough is almost over; Battalion leadership shows up tomorrow, the Battalion arrives Saturday with Quest leadership, and the Quest students arrive on July 10. We have a smaller Battalion this quarter, just 2nd Phase and one flight student, but I'm sure the quarter will be a busy one nonetheless.

Posteritatis commodis servientes,

2nd Lieutenant Samuel Winkler | Unit 42
