Subject: The Sergeants Club | August 2022

Hello,

First of all, I would like to welcome our newest member to the club: Sgt. Noah James (Unit 63) promoted to the rank of Sergeant yesterday, and will be serving as a drill instructor for this upcoming Basic Training.

Today marks the last day of the summer quarter, with 2nd Phase and Leadership & Communications wrapping up. Starting tomorrow, we will have Basic Training Cadre, Missions, and Tech Rescue in the Battalion. Please pray for safe travels for all the guys coming and going this weekend, and for a good upcoming fall quarter. We have five guys each in both Tech and Missions, and around 50 recruits for Basic Training, depending on if all of our expected application come in.

Our numbers for Unit 67 are really encouraging; we had a quite small unit last fall with only 39 men advancing out of Basic Training, and the applications for this fall were quite slow to come in. We were anticipating around 40 recruits based on early projections, so to hopefully break into the 50s is quite encouraging. Lord willing the last few applications will come in, and we will be in the low 50s this fall. Please pray for our student numbers as we continue to deal with fallout from the upheaval of Covid over the past few years, as well as inflation and the increases in prices nationwide.

There are a couple of other specific areas that we would appreciate prayer. First is our instructor situation. Due to the state requirements for certified fire instructors, we are finding it close to impossible to pull off a Fire Academy with our current instructor model. We don't want to lose training options, but we also don't have a clear path forward on finding a solution to the problem. Please pray that we would have wisdom on what we should do to address the issue, and if that requires hiring additional staff, please pray that God would be moving in their hearts to prepare them to come on staff with us at ALERT. Pray for all our instructors that they would be encouraged spiritually, that they would invest well into the men, and that God would keep bringing us the instructors that we need.

Another area for prayer is all of the admin projects that we are trying to make headway on this quarter. We are working on redesigning our website to make it easier to navigate and give a better introduction to the ALERT program for people who don’t know anything about us. Lord willing we will launch the new site in December (and we would really appreciate your feedback once it goes live). We are also looking at making some progress on various business development projects like marketing, strategic planning, and better fundraising practices. Pray that we prioritize these projects well; with students on campus most of the year it can be hard to make time to work on long term projects that are important but not urgent.

Last, I want to remind you all again about two upcoming events: Unit 67's Endurance Hike and the 2023 ALERT Reunion. The hike is scheduled for October 17-19, and it is open to all alumni until we reach our number cap. I can take approximately one squad worth of alumni along, so about 6-8 guys. If you are interested in hiking the Endurance Hike with Unit 67, please let me know, I would love to have you. We also have the 2023 ALERT Reunion on January 27-29, 2023. We will be having a Sergeants Club event again at the reunion, so hopefully you can make it here for that. We'll be announcing more details on the Reunion this fall, and I'll keep you in the loop on the Sergeants Club plans as well.

As always, if there are any ways that I can be praying for you please do not hesitate to reach out to me.

Posteritatis commodis servientes,

2nd Lieutenant Samuel Winkler | Unit 42
