During my time at ALERT, I have had the chance to participate in many challenging events. I have repeatedly had to choose between what is easy and what is right, and have learned discipline in various forms. We push ourselves, work hard, and sometimes deny our bodies comfort so that we may gain something. But what exactly do we hope to gain?
In 1st Corinthians, Paul says, "I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified" (I Cor. 9:27, ESV). Paul had a reason for doing the things he did, and so should we.
If we cannot create a clear vision, instill meaningful goals, or provide our students with a reason for their actions, then all of the discipline and structure will, at best, produce outward conformity rather than inward, lasting change. May our goal be to gain Christ, spread the gospel, and love others, and may our discipline come from that glorious purpose! |
