Subject: ALERT Alumni Update | March 2024

March 29, 2024

Dear Alumni,

At our 30 Year reunion last month, I took time on Saturday evening to lay out our three big strategic goals for the next 3-5 years. They are as follows:

  • 120 men through Basic Training in a calendar year

  • 90% retention rate from Basic Training through Graduation

  • $500,000 in scholarship funds awarded each year

Our heart is to see more young men attend the program and stay in the program till graduation. As part of that, we also want to make it easier for them to afford the program. Please pray for us as we plan and work towards these goals.

Unit 70 Kick-off

On Monday, the men of Unit 70 started their first night of Basic Training. 29 men started training, and one of them is the son of an alumnus from Unit 23. That brings our total number of second-generation ALERT men to 9 (with more coming for 71 this fall). Please pray for the men of Unit 70, that God would be at work in their lives and that they would grow during this time of forging. Some of these men have come from very complicated backgrounds, so also be in prayer for the Cadre as they work with and lead them. You can access the Prayer Calendar for Unit 70 here.

ALERT Cadets Involvement

At the Reunion, some of you had asked about the ALERT Cadet program, if there were still active units, and if there were ways to be involved. Here is a list of the active units and contact information for the leaders of those units if you would like to get involved. It's a great way to invest in the lives of young men, and even recruit for ALERT on the side.

Alumni Classes

I am excited to announce that the alumni classes I announced at the Reunion are now active! We know that not everyone can come back for months at a time for more training, but we want to help keep you all involved, use our resources well, and help guys be able to take more training. These classes are short (typically one week or less), and cover one certification subject, either for guys who are learning for the first time or someone brushing up on rusty skills. Even if you finished Unit 1 and have a wife and kids, you can come take one of our alumni classes. Here is the link for the current batch of classes, with more classes coming soon.

Conqueror 101 | May 4-11, 2024

Conqueror 101 is a week-long retreat run by Col. Marv Behr for guys looking for outdoor adventure and some solid teaching on how to recalibrate their walk with God and firm up their foundation as a warrior for Him. During the week, he will be leading the men through the Conquer Series, among other things. The retreat is intentionally designed with a small group setting to facilitate great interaction and getting to know one another on a deeper level. If you are interested, or know anyone who would benefit from some focused time and mentorship, contact Col. Behr by cell or email: 903-714-3481, mbehr@alertacademy.com

And finally, with a heavy heart, I regret to inform you all of the passing of another ALERT alumnus. Zane Schaffer (Unit 63) was in a motorcycle accident a few weeks ago, and passed away on Sunday due to complications from the accident. He was an organ donor, and a handful of my staff and alumni in the Battalion who knew him were able to go to the hospital in Tyler for his "Walk of Honor”. Please be in prayer for his family and friends during this time of loss, as it has been an exceptionally difficult month for everyone involved.

As we mourn the passing of another one of our alumni, we are reminded of the hope and promise that we celebrate this weekend. We do not grieve as those without hope, for we know that Christ has risen from the dead and brought us new life in Him. This weekend especially, may we rejoice in the promise and hope of our risen Savior.

Have a blessed Resurrection weekend!
