Subject: ALERT Alumni Update | February 2024

February 16, 2024

Dear Alumni,

ALERT just celebrated its 30-year anniversary and reunion last week! We are incredibly grateful for all of you who made the trip to come out and celebrate with us; we missed those who could not make it. We heard from all three of the previous Colonels of ALERT. You can listen to each of their talks here: Col. Fuhrman, Col. Tanner, and Col. Behr. We ran a special edition of the CNMR in honor of Caleb Nelson from Unit 30. We unveiled the memorial wall, remembering those previous alumni who had passed away. You can watch that ceremony here.

We ran a mini-snake walk and talked late into the night. We laughed together, shared stories from the good old days, and joked about how old everybody was getting. We rekindled friendships and forged new ones. We heard from the old guard from Units 1-16 about how this whole thing started, and we released our 30th anniversary story of ALERT documentary. You can also check out the reunion photo album on Flickr. We’ll keep adding photos as we get them collected and edited. Overall, it was a fantastic weekend as we remember God's protection, goodness, and faithfulness over the last 30 years.

As I said in my talk, there are three major things that you all can do for us as we head into the future:

  • Keep asking questions. Keep sending emails text messages and phone calls. Questions help us think deeply about what we are trying to do here. They help us wrestle and fight to make sure we get this program right. It's just too easy to get it wrong, and the cost of getting it wrong is too high.

  • Keep holding us accountable to the mission. Help us stay on course. Help us keep the main thing the main thing. We can suffer from mission drift just like anybody else and any other organization. Keep us accountable to keep the Gospel central to our training here.

  • Keep praying for us. God has to be at work here or we are wasting our time. He has to do the real forging in all of our lives. Pray for safety, pray for protection, pray for wisdom, pray for resources, pray for men, and pray that God’s will be done and His name glorified.

ALERT is God's program, not ours. If He wants to shut it down tomorrow, there is nothing we can do to stop that, and if He wants it to continue for 30 more years, there is not a thing the world can do to stop Him.

To God be the Glory great things He has done!
