Subject: ALERT Alumni Update | April 2025

April 21, 2025

Dear Alumni,

It has been a busy few weeks here at the ALERT Academy, but then again...when is it not? We are now just over halfway through the quarter for our men in 3rd Phase, and Basic Training Unit 72 just completed week four and is hiking the 12 Hour Hike this week.

The next few weeks will be a whirlwind of trips and experiences for our men in training:

  • We will be sending the Missions class to the Yukon in Canada this weekend to work with a First Nations people group.

  • We will be sending the Construction Unit to Port Alsworth, Alaska, in May to help Preston Cavner (Unit 2) with building projects his non-profit organization is working on.

  • Tech Rescue will be taking their Mount Magazine trip to Arkansas next month to practice their rope rescue skills out on the cliffs.

  • The EMTs will be starting their clinical rotations in the next few weeks as well.

We also may have some deployment time in there as well before we wrap up with Graduation on May 30th. Please be in prayer in all these comings and goings as we close the quarter out.

Prayer Requests

  • We are currently dealing with a measles outbreak on campus. One of the incoming recruits for Unit 72 came down with measles two days into Basic Training, accidentally exposing the whole unit in the process. Over the last few weeks, the sickness has burned through Basic Training and spread to some of the staff as well. We had to cancel one deployment and end another one early due to the exposure, and have had to make adjustments to both the Basic Training and Battalion schedules as a result. Today Basic Training was able to resume a normal training routine, as all the susceptible men have caught and recovered from the measles. Please be in prayer for all the individuals who are currently sick, and pray that we could successfully contain the spread.

  • Basic Training Commanding Officer Maj. Daniel Hawley's father passed away last week after a battle with cancer. Please be in prayer for his family, and for Major Hawley as he leads Basic Training in the midst of this loss.

  • Ryan Spandrio (Unit 52) died in a motorcycle accident just a few days ago. He was a firefighter/medic working in CA, and he leaves behind a wife and two children. Please be in prayer for his family as they grieve.

Finally, Unit 72's Endurance Hike will be May 5-7. If you would like to participate in this Hike, please get in touch with Capt. Samuel Winkler (swinkler@alertacademy.com). He can fill you in on the details of joining the hike.

Forge on!
