Healthy Snacks, Healthy Smiles, Healthy You!

Thank you to the 43 classrooms from across the region who took part in the school dental-nutrition campaign and joined us in celebrating healthy snacks and healthy smiles! This campaign would not have been possible without your leadership in the classroom.

Check out the photo mosaic!
Snack, Smile, Snap! photo challenge participants snapped pictures of themselves choosing healthy snack and lunch options in the classroom. Over 500 fun and creative photos were submitted and have been incorporated into a digital photo mosaic. Visit our website to check out the mosaic with your students. See if you can spot any familiar faces by zooming in on the mosaic!

Also available on our website is a list of winning classrooms from the photo challenge and the Ultimate Lunchbox Drawing Contest. All prize winners will receive a ‘Snack Attack’ classroom celebration hosted by the health unit, and a set of lunch kits has been awarded to the grand prize winning classroom. Sun Safe Environment in Schools

With the summer months coming along, students will be spending more time outdoors. This presents a timely opportunity to encourage sun safe practices.

Key Messages can include:

Wear a Bucket Hat – Wear a wide brim hat that protects your ears, neck and face
Play in the Shade – Seek or create shade by using buildings, trees, canopies, tents, tarps, and umbrellas
Put on Sunscreen – Apply and re-apply SPF 30 or higher, broad spectrum sunscreen and lip balm
Cover Up – Wear weather appropriate clothing that provides protection from the sun

Wear Sunglasses – Protect your eyes by wearing sunglasses with UVA and UVB protection
The health unit has resources on sun safety and the dangers of ultraviolet (UV) exposure that align with Ontario’s Health and Physical Education Curriculum. We also offer an interactive classroom activity where students create bracelets with UV sensitive beads. These beads change colour when exposed to UV rays and can help serve as a sun safety reminder.

Contact your health unit for more information on this activity and as well, for support in creating a sun safe environment to help protect staff, students and parents at your school.
