Subject: Who sinned?

Dear Hot Metal Community,

We continue in our Lenten season of embracing hard questions with the story of the man born blind (John 9:1-41), and the question, "Who sinned?" This is the question so many ask of Jesus about this man, assuming that sin must be involved if there was something so egregious as hardship.

But Jesus refuses to play this theological blame game. He refuses to give into the ableist assumption that a disability means sin. He simply sees the real person in front of him, and real opportunity to reveal God at work in the world.

Sometimes, our questions reveal more about us and our assumptions than about God. What this story reminds us is that sometimes the response we get from God is to look into our own hearts, and find a deeper and more mysterious God than we at first thought.

I'm excited that we'll welcome Pastor Erin Angeli, from our friends at the Commonwealth of Oakland, to walk with us through this story and all the hard questions is brings up for us! Please join us on Sunday!

Peace,

Pastor Erin

PS I'll be out of town on vacation from Thursday, March 16-Monday, March 21. If you are in need of emergency pastoral care during this time, please reach out to karl@hotmetalbridge.com or lachan@hotmetalbridge.com.

The Compassion Team (and friends) will lead us in a Lent-long “Listening Season.” Sign Up for a 1-to-1 conversation with a team member, and share your story, passion, and heart. We have a goal of listening to 66 people! By hearing all our stories, we’ll be able to discern together where the next chapter of Hot Metal is going to go!

Lenten Nurturing Group - Tuesdays at 7:30p

We'll be discussing "Spiritual Direction" by Henri Nouwen and tackling some BIG QUESTIONS for Lent! Spiritual Direction is a book of collected works from Henri Nouwen, curated by some of the students who knew him best. Offering gentle guidance and wisdom, this book attempts to give wise advice on how to live a deep spiritual life in connection with others. Some of the questions it explores are: Where do I begin? Who am I? Who is God for me? Where do I belong? This book is ideal for anyone who is looking to engage deeper in their faith - whether you are in a place of deconstruction, reconstruction, or anywhere in between - we hope you'll join us! This will be mainly led and facilitated by Nathan Rosswog! Yay!!! Join us using the Sunday Worship Zoom Link!

Order your book from the library, local bookstore, or here. Or email Pastor Erin if you need it ordered for you!
