If you’re like me, those two words, “Supper’s Ready!” create an immediate memory, with the people who are our "heart holds".
This Sunday, October 4, 2026, we are back, baby! Worship at 10:30 in the Spartan Center, 134 E. Elizabeth Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15207! In perfect timing, this Sunday is also World Communion Sunday.
We will gather around the table, 🍴
We will be nourished by the Word, 📖
We will pray together and carry the needs of one another and celebrate our joys, 🙏
We will receive the sacrament of holy communion, 🤲
We will be strengthened to extend this table of grace and love to all.🕊️
In one of the congregations I served, a parishioner was a successful architect. Along with designing homes and storefronts, he also provided insights and sketches for congregational spaces. He shared that he advised Christian congregations to consider having a table front and center in the worship space.
We are people who meet at the table. If the Spirit is snapping and crackling, we
encounter Jesus around our communion table. The celebration of communion involves preparation to come to the table, to partake of the bread and juice, and the all-important afterward actions to extend the table to all.
At Hot Metal Bridge, we celebrate the sacrament of communion every Sunday. This World Communion Sunday, we acknowledge doing so with disciples of Jesus around the world. Supper’s Ready Indeed!
🏠HOW WE EXTEND THE TABLE 🏠
In the United Methodist understanding, we believe that “there is no holiness but social holiness”. (John Wesley) We do not live nor serve in isolation.
One of the foundational ways we serve is to broaden the table as we meet, listen to, learn from, and provide for our neighbors. The very space where we worship on Sundays is where the monthly food pantry is held every first Saturday.
As I volunteered at the food pantry, I noticed how early people gathered and waited outside. It was from that observation that the monthly FREE BREAKFAST was started. We provide fresh coffee and “Krispy Kreme” donuts, juices, fruit, cheese, assorted breakfast bars, and most importantly, connection and community.
