Subject: Raffle to win Beyonce Tickets!!!

Dear Hot Metal Community,

This week, we'll continue in our journey through the stories of Genesis - foundational texts not only for our Christian tradition but for our Jewish and Muslim siblings as well. We'll turn briefly from Abraham himself to two characters forced to the periphery, Hagar and Ishmael.

Hagar and Ishmael are cast out of Abraham's house because of Sarah's jealousy and her belief that the promises God has made are finite. She is scared for her own resources, and that fear turns into hatred (Yoda would have some words of wisdom for her). And yet, even though they are cast out by Abraham, they are not forgotten or forsaken by God. God still provides and promises great things for Ishmael. God is able to see that there is abundance in the promises ahead, even if Sarah and Abraham can't.

We see this fear and hatred in many different places in our world today. But as we close out Pride month, my heart is pulled mostly to the ways in which we fear and scapegoat our trans siblings. Too many places in this nation want to cast out and forsake trans kids, because of false narratives of scarcity and entitlement. We'll look at this story of Hagar and Ishmael through a new lens, with our hearts open toward how God is calling us to provide water, care, and protection for all of God's children, especially those others would cast out. I hope you will join us in person, on Zoom, or at Swissvale Pride!

In Christ's name,

Pastor Erin
