SPECIAL OFFERING

ABOLISHING MEDICAL DEBT ON ALL SAINTS SUNDAY

Many of our neighbors are strapped with medical debt, one of the leading causes of bankruptcy along with damage to credit scores and reluctance to seek necessary medical care. By joining with the Matthew 25 Initiative of the Pittsburgh Presbytery, we have the opportunity to abolish over $11 million of medical debt in Allegheny County for pennies on the dollar.

On All Saints, this Sunday, we will take a special offering for Undue Medical Debt during our regular worship gathering. Yet a large part of our extended community don't attend on Sunday mornings and that's ok! Online offerings are another way we are one community even when not physically gathered.

WHAT IS THE MATTHEW 25 INITIATIVE?

Hot Metal is a Matthew 25 congregation, which means we have agreed to be a part of a movement in the Presbyterian Church USA to build congregational vitality, dismantle structural racism, and eradicate systemic poverty. Rooted in Jesus’ teachings in Matthew 25:31-46, this movement calls on mid councils, congregations, and groups to live out the church’s mission through bold and compassionate discipleship.

WHAT IS UNDUE MEDICAL DEBT?

Undue Medical Debt (formerly RIP Medical Debt) is a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit whose purpose is to strengthen communities by erasing financially burdensome medical debt. Powered by donors, they buy and erase the medical debts of everyday people, freeing them from bills they can’t afford.

Undue Medical Debt will focus on abolishing the debt of families living within 4 times the poverty rate in our area, or who have medical debt that exceeds 5% of their income. People do not apply for debt relief, it just happens. They don’t know until they get a letter from Undue telling them the good news. In the letters sent to those benefiting from our campaign, it will say something like, “Your debt has been abolished by your neighbors in the Pittsburgh Presbytery”.
