Subject: On Display 🪞 Hot Metal Bridge Faith Community

A message from Hot Metal Bridge Faith Community Interim Pastor, Sally Jo:

🪞 ON DISPLAY 🪞

People say that after the Christmas season, the most decorative time of the year is Halloween. From my noticing of the neighborhood and surrounding communities, it is accurate. In my observation, skeletons seem to be the rage this season.

Of course, there is the popular giant skeleton, which in some instances stays around all year, sporting a Santa hat, Terrible Towel, or swimsuit depending on the season. Many yards feature a plethora of smaller skeletons sitting on chairs, lounging on porch steps, posed in athletic competition; two of my neighbors have yards bedecked with all the monsters of the slasher films: Freddy, Jason, and Michael. Joining them are scary clowns, demons on swings, and ghouls of assorted varieties. I confess, it’s a fright for me just walking by in the daylight.

The Halloween holiday corresponds with All Saints Day when we remember the dearly departed and celebrate the saints who have blessed our journeys. I find it an interesting contrast from the spot-lit, garish displays to the celebration of the saints who humbly taught us how the gospel is lived. These dear souls wore no mask; they were real and genuine in each aspect of their lives teaching us how to live honestly and wholly in days of joy and in times of sorrow.

Post Trick-or-Treat nights, as you savor a Reese’s Peanut-Butter Cup or a bag of M&M’s, pause to ponder the saints you have been blessed to have known and by them been known. Give thanks and recall the lessons learned.
