An opportunity for hyper-direct aid to families impacted by ICE in Minnesota comes from Hot Metaller, Katy Getsie, who now lives Minneapolis. Through local neighborhood organizing, Katy has been assigned to provide groceries for 10 families who are currently sheltering in place. She has been providing for these families out of her own pocket but is running out of money to continue.

More locally, Hope New Worshipping Community in Charleroi has long supported their Haitian neighbors whose temporary protected status was set to end on February 3 and has been halted by a judge in Washington County, but the threat remains. Hope New Worshipping Community would like to gather friends and allies that would pray and be willing to have their name on an email list to be informed of the needs if things change and ICE raids begin to happen. There will be a zoom meeting tonight, February 5, at 7PM.

For years, Fishes & Loaves Cooperative Ministries has been providing free groceries to Hazelwood neighbors in the very space we worship in, and Hot Metallers have begun serving breakfast to those waiting in line. No RSVP is needed, just arrive ready to assist neighbors with love, dignity, and a passion for donuts.

Come as you are, grab a drink if you’d like, and spend a little time with friends, neighbors, and a community that believes grace is meant to be shared. More details coming soon.

If you’ve ever wondered what to do when the news feels overwhelming, this is one place to start. Every Friday, we choose to be present in a place where fear and uncertainty are very real. We gather outside the ICE office on the South Side with Casa San JosĂ© and other faith communities to sing, to pray, and to remind all of Pittsburgh that our faith demands dignity for all people.
