Life expectancy for patients with this condition is short.
Sickle cell is a hereditary blood disease. Many of the body's red blood
cells are sickle-shaped instead of round, and they get stuck in small
veins, slowing or blocking blood and oxygen from getting to various
parts of the body. The disease ultimately affects a patient's organs.
Frequent blood transfusions, along with countless medications, are the
treatment for sickle cell. Transfusions help ease the bone-crushing pain
people with the disease experience, and also helps move clots so they
don't cause more issues. Elijah often needs multiple transfusions in one
visit, and has received 25-30 so far. Elijah's mother, Asia
Jones, wants to raise awareness of sickle cell anemia, and also help
replenish some of the blood supply that has been available when Elijah
needed it. The Central Blood Bank mobile unit will be taking donations
in the parking lot during worship on August 13. Register at www.centralbloodbank.org using Group Code Z0021022. Walk-ins welcome!
