I get a lot of questions about the drum and bass balance method using a VU meter, and although I demonstrate it, the technique felt so incomplete to me.
After a lot of experimenting, I've come up with a way that you can set all of your balances in no time at all using just the default sample peak meters in your DAW.
In the example, I mix a 50+ track song, complete with horns, multiple guitars, multiple keyboards, and loads of background vocals, really fast using only the meters. And it's mixed in mono, which we know is much more difficult than stereo.
This meter balance technique is a way to get your mix in the ballpark fast, but remember that's it's not the final balance and you'll still have to tweak it a little. Still, if you're having trouble getting balances, this will really help you.
