Subject: When carving doesn’t mean turkey 🍗🍗

Important: Day 1 of the 3-Day Mixing EQ Challenge has dropped, Friend!

When I was first starting to mix, a smoky, leather-skinned, studio-worn producer I worked with would always come into the studio first thing in the late morning and say, “Let’s get carving,” as if we were carving a turkey for Thanksgiving. 🦃🦃

What he meant was that we were going to use the EQ to carve up the frequency response of various mix elements so they fit together better.

I was young enough to not understand that sometimes the most effective EQ technique at your command is the Cut portion of an EQ, but this seasoned and celebrated producer soon taught me that it was the best and fastest way to a powerful and sparkly mix.

You’re going to see how effective that “carving” can be during Day 1 of my Mixing EQ Challenge (Don’t worry, we’ll do some boosting too!).

There I’ll take you through the 6 frequency areas that cause the most trouble in a mix (I’m going to throw in an additional one for good measure as well).

If you want to get rid of the mud and boxiness 📦, emphasize the pulse of the song 🫀, and add sparkle and definition ❇️💎, you’ll definitely want to check this out.
