Subject: If we all had this at home. . .

Hi Friend,

I was really lucky to be able to hang out at Bob Clearmountain’s tracking studio the other night listening to both a stereo and Atmos mixes of an album he just did.

Of course you know Bob from his work with Springsteen, the Stones, Paul McCartney, Bryan Adams, Bon Jovi, and tons more superstars.

This is the console in his tracking studio at Apogee (he calls it his “fun” console).

As you would expect, the mixes were dynamite - totally state-of-the-art. Bob has the unique ability to create a perfectly balanced mix with all the frequencies present, and make it feel punchy and exceptionally exciting - that's what makes him a master mixer.

We got to talking and he told me how much mixing he does in the box, which is actually quite a lot (using a lot of his plugins, of course) considering all the vintage analog outboard gear he has around.

You probably don't have Bob’s resources (his main console is a 72 input SSL E in his house!), but you can use some of the same techniques in order to get your mixes in the ballpark with major label releases.

I’ve been showing musicians, songwriters and producers how to do that for a long time, and I’ll be doing it again in my Bigger Sounding Mix Workshop coming up soon.

Watch your email for more info, but if you want, you can sign up for it in advance here.

In the meantime, pull out a copy of Roxy Music’s Avalon, or David Bowie’s Let’s Dance and dig on Bob Clearmountain’s wonderful work.

Bobby
