Here's to a safe, happy, and prosperous New Year!
I want you to begin the year on the right foot, so let me offer 3 simple steps to make sure that your music creation is something that makes you happy every time you hear it. Follow your heart. If you're chasing a music trend, you're already behind. Best to do what pleases you, since that's why we're all in this business to begin with. Follow your ears. A reference track is a critical piece of the puzzle to calibrate your hearing, and have a sound to aim for (no, that doesn't necessarily mean you're following a trend unless you try to copy it exactly). Follow your mind. Think your parts through. Is this part really needed? Does it clash with another one? Should it only be in one section instead of the entire song? Should it be a different sound or a different register?
These simple steps will help you make music at a higher level that satisfies your artistic needs as well.
