Hi Friend,
We often hear from physicians nowadays
that we must protect ourselves from sunlight. We may get the impression
that the less sunlight exposure we get, the healthier we will be. But
that’s a bit of a misconception.
While it’s true that excessive
exposure to ultraviolet light can damage our skin and eyes, less
sunlight is not necessarily better. You see (pun intended), just as your
skin needs exposure to sunlight to produce vitamin D for you, your
eyes’ ocular nerve needs exposure to unfiltered, natural sunlight each
day for proper stimulation, too.
Many of us spend so much time
indoors and in automobiles now that we don’t really get much sunlight
exposure. And if your eyes are sheltered behind eyeglasses or contact
lenses when you are outdoors, then your ocular nerve won’t get the
stimulation it needs. And you won’t have optimal eyesight.
Certainly,
you don’t want to look directly at the sun. And you do need to protect
your eyes from unusually intense sunlight, such as that reflected off
snow or water. But in most situations, for optimal eyesight, you should
not be filtering sunlight through glasses or other lenses. You need some
unfiltered sunlight exposure for your eyes each day.
So get outdoors and get your eyes used to sunlight exposure. Artificial light is not the same.
Keep an eye out for the next lesson in this email course. It should arrive in a few days.
