The Role of Individual Experience and Personal Insight in Guided Chaos
By Yosef Susskind, GC 4th Degree

In his ongoing campaign to “get our minds right,” Senior Master Al continues to assert that a student’s individual experience, their long path of personal development within the art, is every bit as valid as Al’s own experience.  Our moments of insight, which we meet along that path, are every bit as valuable as the insights the masters share with us.

It is certainly possible to misinterpret an experience and to draw the wrong conclusions—when we stray from the principles, this outcome is a given—but a proper understanding of the art’s fundamental principles acts as a corrective lens, removing distortions and ambiguities that might lead us into error.  The principles of the art are “real” insofar as they are faithful to the laws of physics and human physiology.  As long as we adhere to the principles, our inquiry remains rooted in reality, and our conclusions can be trusted to serve us in the moment of truth.
We are all flawed primates.  Al was not asserting that we can never be mistaken, and of course our teachers do provide us with invaluable guidance along our way.  Al’s point is that when we are not mistaken, and our insights are true to the principles, they are no less valuable than if they had been spoken by Grand Master John.

In light of Al’s assertion, it is no surprise that some of our greatest training breakthroughs come from learning from fellow students.  Working with a variety of advanced students with diverse experiences and different body types is a great catalyst for one’s development in the art.  This is a benefit that we who train at GC headquarters in NY take for granted.

It is always refreshing when students from GC training groups in the U.S. and abroad make a pilgrimage to NY.  Their enthusiasm and gratitude for our teaching, and the amount of personal insight they glean from the experience, reminds us just how lucky we are to train with our masters and fellow students on a regular basis.  Even if you have devoted the time and money to train privately with a GC instructor, making the trip to a large GC school will widen the range of your experience in the art, and improve your game dramatically.
I want to personally invite all practitioners of Guided Chaos to join us at the Combative Movement Immersion Seminar from Nov 3rd to Nov 5th at GC Headquarters in Elmsford NY This will be the only seminar at the main school in 2017, so I expect the turnout to be epic.  It will be a great opportunity, not only to learn from the masters, but to experience moving with a variety of students with different abilities and experiences.  Each day will end with at least two hours of one-on-one movement, refining specific facets of contact flow and combative movement dynamics.

This year’s seminar is also a rare opportunity to network with other practitioners of the art.  We strongly encourage students to visit each other’s schools, to be active on each other’s martial-arts-related social media, and to collaborate on training events.  If you have a GC training group and want to host a GC seminar, our instructors are always ready to help.

I hope to see you there!
