Subject: So You Want to Hit with Power from Any Position?

ISSUE #219  GUIDED CHAOS NEWS         follow us @GuidedChaos    ENDORSEMENTS

SO YOU WANT TO HIT WITH INTERNAL POWER FROM ANY POSITION?*
  *And at close range?

We're assuming here that you're fighting to save your life.

Well, you can fight like Neo in the Matrix--but it's all flowery scripted choreography and if you can learn to watch it with a practiced eye--you'll see the strikes have no power or balance and have completely predictable timing.

You'd expect that from a movie but not a martial arts class, right? Then why do most self defense classes have you "strike a pose" when you hit and block?

You can fight like a UFC fighter--but you can't hit to lethal targets with full power and penetration because sportive rules keep you from maiming your opponent--in both training and competition. So you practice bludgeoning "safe" targets with restricted strikes (no gouges, spine cranks, boot kicks to the groin, liver or skull, etc.). Oh yeah--and you're a young super-athlete with superior genetics too, right?

Or you can learn to grapple and tie up with an unknown adversary and pray he's less skilled than you, less strong, less savage, AND that he has no buddies. In the ring, they have WEIGHT classes and you know your opponent (he's on the fight card!). Maybe the person who assaults you in the parking lot can introduce himself first and tell you his weaknesses--then abduct you...

As we say over and over, real violence is ugly and brutal. You never know how you'll be attacked or how the attack can change and morph with your reactions. In Guided Chaos, you learn to flow and adapt with the shitstorm you're thrown into.

A major part of surviving that is doing something that virtually no other system does: Hit From Grappling Range.

Not control. Not Submit. Not overpower. But HIT and penetrate, loosely and with fully balanced Body Unity, to targets that are in constant chaotic motion and that are being actively defended.

In the next few Newsletters, Lt Col Al will be explaining at length how you can train to do that. In the meantime, I'm going to talk about a drill that can teach you to hit targets dead center at different angles with full Dropping Energy. For newcomers to our Newsletter, Dropping is what gives power to strikes at close range, when you're nose-to-nose and have seemingly no room to wind up, "chamber", cock or pull back your arm to hit with all your might. There are many Dropping drills on the Attackproof Companion Part 1 (DVD or On Demand Download) but the one I'm going to talk about now is Ball Compression.

Ball compression helps develop Internal Power. What is that? Power developed through perfect alignment, nervous system excitation and concordance with gravity. Not gross muscular contraction, which is External Power--what is used in karate and most martial arts that only young men and supreme athletes can use with any kind of success in the streets. That's all of us, right?

Now to get Internal Power, you can study Tai chi or Bagua or Hsingi for a lifetime and maybe get a glimmer of it. Maybe. Because you'll be so focused on obscure or untranslatable Asian terminology, confusing drills and stylish uniforms that have no correlation to real violence or physics that you can get forever lost in the sauce. The Tai Chi school that teaches the real deal for combat is exceedingly rare (see Does Combat Tai Chi Still Exist for political/historical reasons why this is so). And then you have to ask yourself: "Did my instructor actually use this stuff in real combat?" i.e., not just in tournaments.

Now you may get lucky and be able to have someone of some "skill" interpret it all for you, but have they actually used it to help them survive repeated bloodbaths and mayhem? Have you ever heard the saying "That style worked for its inventor but not for its students"? In other words, something got lost passing it down through the generations--possibly even in the first generation.

Here's the cool thing about John Perkins: he created Guided Chaos on his own by being forced to fight from the age of 5 by his father and uncles and later by work as an emergency response cop during a very bad period in the urban jungle of Yonkers NY. And as an unlicensed pit fighter on the docks of Newark and New Orleans.

On his own, forced to adapt, Perkins discovered so called Adaptive Combat Principles that only later were corroborated by tai chi masters to be similar (and by some experts) superior to what they were teaching. So when you learn Guided Chaos, you're getting it straight from the horse's mouth in English and concrete physics, not some 50th generation interpretation or re-imagining.  Which is why his students can do it (and teach it) also.

So back to Ball Compression. As shown in the Attackproof Companion Part 1, get a firm rubber ball (a fully inflated basketball, soccer or volleyball will do) and place it between any weapon surface (palm heel, knuckles of fist, point of elbow, heel of foot, etc.) and an unyielding target. The easiest would be a flat brick wall but you can make it harder by using a large tree or cylindrical lamp post.

Place the weapon lightly against the ball which is against the target and Drop hit so that the Dropping energy goes dead center into the ball with out you or it rolling off-line (or the ball shooting out sideways and you falling head first into the wall!). Do the Drop Hit without ever breaking contact with the ball. In other words, compress the hell out of it. Do this by Dropping straight down into a flat foot root. Do this by rapidly bending your knees no more than an inch or two and do it without first rising. Make the stopping of the Drop even more sudden, if possible, than the Drop itself (this is akin to snapping a whip). Power is created by your momentum traveling rapidly downwards and then getting reflected off the ground and directed into the strike by the stopping of the Drop. if done properly, you will feel a massive shock wave blasting back into your shoulder (hence the need for the unyielding target). Obviously do not do this drill if you have rotator cuff problems.

Remember: You can Drop into either foot or both but you must Drop straight down into a flat foot.

With training you will be able to Contain the Over-travel and send this energy back into your root where it can be recycled into another strike like a jack hammer (see Ricocheting Energy and
Containing the Over-travel in our book and the Attackproof Companion Part 2 (DVD or On Demand Download). All this requires superior balance (developed by drills such as the Vacuum and Crazy Walks, also in the Attackproof Companion Part 2).

The end result of doing the Ball Compression drill 5 minutes a day? The ability to blast your enemy at any angle, at close range, with any weapon, with dead-center penetrating power without losing your balance In other words, Internal Power. We have other drills which can develop this ability even further.
--Matt Kovsky.

Reader response to last Newsletter's article "The Rear Naked Choke"
HOW TO BREAK THE ENEMY'S NECK
(When Fighting to Save Your Life Only)

I found the " choke" discussion interesting, but thought two additional points should be made.

1)  Who can say that we in Guided Chaos don't use chokes or cranks?  What most people see is contact flow -- how we train, not fight.

2) Unless silently dispatching a sentry, most chokes, cranks or breaks are not planned.  As one of the many masters with whom I have studied says, locks of any kind are "incidental if not accidental".  I have found it much simpler to crank a person's neck in a variety of ways SINCE I began studying guided chaos -- especially against non-practitioners.  Balance and flow allow one to move over an opponent like water. Often, those not trained in GC expose their necks to chops, cranks and chokes.  Of course, such chokes and/or cranks are not slowly applied sport chokes.  They are done as quickly as any strike rupturing the windpipe or cracking vertebrae.  I learned such techniques from a probation officer who spent four years in Vietnam as a LRP/Ranger.  Finally, as it is not easy to break a person's neck using upper body strength, most chokes/cranks are most effective when locked on while simultaneously breaking your opponent's balance -- which GC practitioners excel at (breaking opponents' balance -- thus causing your opponent great trauma with his own body weight).

KILL THE ENEMY:
Close Quarters Combat
for U.S. Military Personnel

"The Kill the Enemy video is the greatest work of modern combat of our time!
In the dirty bloody world of real combat there are no second place winners. In combat there is only Kill and come home. John trains you for just such an encounter. There is nothing in the world that can ever prepare you for the harsh cold reality of combat, but John Perkins has found a way to bridge the gap between school and real world no-holds-barred REALITY!"
--Captain Jonathan Edwards, 101st Airborne/Air Assault

POLITICALLY INCORRECT
HAND-TO-HAND COMBAT...?

In 1989, the RUSSIANS instituted a hand-to-hand combat methodology that far surpassed ours in terms of SIMPLICITY and EFFECTIVENESS. Ironically, it was nearly IDENTICAL to the system OUR military used--BACK IN WORLD WAR II!! WHAT HAPPENED?!!

Through a political process too convoluted and distressing to elaborate on here, over the years, our soldiers' hand-to-hand training has become convoluted, mis-directed, and relatively ineffective except under "sportive  or "competitive" (i.e. unrealistic) conditions.

KILL THE ENEMY is a simple video guide that does away with the boxing-grappling-locking nonsense that has become the "politically correct" standard of training for our soldiers in recent years. Instead of subjecting our military personnel to methods that could get them killed, Master Perkins and Lieutenent Colonel Ridenhour USMC provide basic, effective methods proven in World War II. Distilled from Part 1 of our book ATTACK PROOF, these strategies (Guided Chaos Combatives) are the basic tools that John Perkins' Guided Chaos builds upon. Topics include:

  • Comparison: US vs. Russian Hand-to-Hand Training
  • The Myth of Grappling
  • Defensive/Offensive Posture
  • Basic Hand Strikes
  • Bag/Dummy Training/10 Seconds of Hell
  • Wrestling the Rifle
  • Covering Your Back

YOUR INSTRUCTORS:

GM Perkins
Former forensic crime scene expert
John Perkins:

Perkins has trained in Native American "Anything Goes" fighting principles since the age of 5. Over a period of 20 years he combined it with experience gained from over 100 extremely violent arrests (where people routinely ended up in the hospital or morgue), unsanctioned pit-fighting, World War II Close Quarters Combat, the internal aspects of tai chi and the ancient Greek combat art of Elephtheri Pali. In 1978, he formally created Ki Chuan Do and the principles of Guided Chaos [in1998 he officially changed the name of the art itself to Guided Chaos]. Unlike the "fight-by-the-numbers" self-defense methods popular today, the Groundfighting component of GC is probably unlike anything you've ever seen before.

Lt Col Ridenhour
Iraq and Afghanistan combat veteran
Lt. Col. Al Ridenhour USMC:

Infantry unit commander and instructor of unarmed combat, he is also a Guided Chaos Master. Security Manager, Assistant Operations Officer, and the Anti-Terrorism Force Protection Officer for the II Marine Expeditionary Force in Iraq. Worked with U.S. Customs Service and U.S. Border Patrol for the JTF-6 counter drug mission. Blitz magazine article on Guided Chaos Australia Seminar
"
Let me start by saying I thought I'd seen all that the world of 'reality-based self defence' had to offer, so for the easily bored out there, I'll cut to the chase. What I witnessed on the weekend of 26 and 27 March is the closest thing I've come across that resembles a modern-day, reality-based martial art and not just another 'combatives system'. Does it work? Hell, yeah! I got my arse well and truly kicked and at times felt like I was in the middle of a Jason Bourne fight scene."
--Clive Girdham, former Senshido and Geoff Thompson instructor [excerpted from the exclusive review of the Guided Chaos Australia Seminar in the Aug. print edition of BLITZ MAGAZINE: Australia's #1 Martial Arts magazine volume 25, issue 6

"Guided Chaos is the only training in my 15 plus years of Corrections that translates into real world application, period."
---Bob Miller, Corrections Officer at the largest facility in Oregon

"Guided Chaos is the only thing that has worked for me in real life situations. Unless you are 6'3" and 285 lbs of muscle, most of the Defensive Tactics stuff (ok all of the Defensive Tactics stuff) will get you hurt. And even if you are that big and strong, there is always someone bigger and stronger and there may be a lot of them. Nothing like dealing with one guy and it turns into a free for all with all his buddies. This is where you literally need to 'adapt or die' and Guided Chaos is the only training in my 15 plus years of Corrections that translates into real world application, period.

"If I had to pick only one martial arts system in the world it would be Guided Chaos..."
--Dr. Robert L. O'Block founder and publisher of the American College of Forensic Examiners International, American Board for Certification in Homeland Security

"...through watching videos put out by attackproof.com, and by
reading Attackproof, the book, I have learned real survival skills.
These skills have been learned...at an exponentially higher practical
yield-per-hour training rate than any other martial art classes or
seminar I've ever attended, or ever even heard rumor of."
--Matthew Shoener, Police Officer, Scranton, PA
