Questions About GC Combatives

From a recent email:

"I have a few questions:

1. Does the Guided Chaos Enhanced video -with the gentleman using the tiger claw- contain the Sensitivity flow drills?

2. Can I use this video as a stand alone training video?

3. What is your take on the SCARS system by Jerry Peterson?

It seems to be a similar system based on offense aggression that he used to train Navy Seals. Seems to lack blocks.

4. Which System came first?

5. Do you train how to enter on a Boxer? Which in my opinion is the hardest style to train against.

Thank You for your time"

Thanks for your questions.

Not sure which video you are referring to by "Guided Chaos Enhanced" but since that is a description used in our best-selling GC Combatives (GCC) dvd (or MATRIX streaming/download) I'll assume you meant that one.

The GCC vid does not contain any of the higher-level sensitivity drills as it is meant as a fast, crash-course in basic WWII Combatives that have been "enhanced" by the GC principles of Balance, Body Unity and Looseness (altho looseness is only partially addressed for this purpose).

GCC is meant for people who need to learn nasty stuff fast and primarily solo. It also focuses on power, speed and footwork as well as the critical GC principle of "Dropping" (balance and power production).

This is a superb, stand-alone solo training video, however it does not get deeply into the real meat of GC because that takes longer and requires training partners (tho many of the attributes of all GC principles -- Balance, Body Unity, Looseness, Sensitivity and Improvisation CAN be drilled solo with our other vids). Sensitivity and Improvisation cannot be fully trained without partners.

I have not looked into the SCARS system in decades so I couldn't give you a fair opinion. I am more familiar with the system derived from it by Tim Larkin and that system seems to be focused on practicing choreographed movement, which in our book is a prescription for disaster.

We do not "block" per se in GC but don't be confused: avoidance, absorption (vaguely similar to tai chi), and close contact "blending" with the attacker's movement so as to become "Unavailable and Unavoidable" are critical skills developed in GC so that you are attacking and defending simultaneously, spontaneously, pre-emptively and creatively with the ability to change your movement as necessary subconsciously.

GC principles were developed throughout John Perkins' life but the art was officially "born" in 1979: https://guidedchaos.kartra.com/page/History

Yes, we train how to enter vs. a boxer but the principle of how that is done does not change for entry into any attacker's brand of movement. There are 2 "entry" techniques taught in the abbreviated GC Combatives component of GC that are potentially effective in entering against a "boxer" but again, GCC is just the 1st part of GC and these 2 entries are specific techniques that in themselves are not improvisatory, however as you learn the rest of the art they can be adapted or disposed of entirely.

A highly trained boxer can be extremely dangerous however there are limitations and vulnerabilities in their movements because of the limited nature of the training:
--no kicks, knees, elbows, head butts, gouging, open hand strikes, etc.
--no real extreme infighting methods (clinching doesn't qualify)
--no groundfighting, among other things

One of our old students was a champion boxer and gave this review:

"The difference between boxing and street fights is that many street fights can mean life or death. John Perkins teaches the most effective and easy to learn methods of self-defense in existence today."
Doug Gray—Former Super Welterweight Champion of the NABO
