CONTACT FLOW DEEP DIVE #6

So What's In it?

WATCH THIS VIDEO CAREFULLY: Repeated viewings of GM Perkins’ movement while flowing with masters yields tremendous insights into how to react properly; words cannot fully convey this but you will begin to feel in your own body what is effective GC movement.

    ▪    Again, don’t just recoil (yield). Move your whole body to evade and strike simultaneously. The beauty of these videos is you get to see GM Perkins perform multiple examples of this principle yet totally free-form and unplanned.
    ▪    Again: do NOT try to stop their motion – let them go where they want but don’t be there when they arrive.
    ▪    Simple tip: when they pull you in as an attempt to suppress you, don’t resist -- use it to hit or disrupt their balance.
    ▪    Again, never follow their line backwards while yielding. Yield on a different line (corkscrew) so you can return on yet another different line.
    ▪    The drills Polishing the Sphere+Washing the Body=Unavailable>Unavoidable development.
    ▪    Simultaneous yield and return; avoid and attack.
    ▪    You are always soft because you don’t have time to analyze motion. 99% yin, 1% yang.
    ▪    This will provide multiple points of entry using multiple weapons simultaneously because the enemy may pick up a single entry/attack.
    ▪    This is why experimentation is the key to GC practice and rote techniques sabotage growth.
    ▪    Contact Flow performed alternately slow/medium/fast.
Moving slowly, use hydraulic motion (full Body Unity driven by the legs and re-rooting).
The entire body moves at all times and especially keeping the head out of the way at all times.
    ▪    Make them miss so your return can take the shortest path in the least time, always moving in.
    ▪    Efficiency=Maximum yield in the shortest time/space.
    ▪    Never yield straight back: corkscrew/curve/angle to enable soonest return.
    ▪    Water will find the shortest path yet is infinitely soft yet cannot be compressed.
    ▪    You solidify when dropping and then instantly liquefy.
    ▪    Change the parameters at all times: never hit from where you are, hit from where you’re going to be.
    ▪    Important not to cheat, press, speed up or you will sabotage your development.
The above becomes even more important with contact flow with 2 partners.
    ▪    By exerting no pressure while remaining sensitive and “in contact” you get to go where you want and hit where you want.
    ▪    If your opponent’s energy or movement is “stagnant” (insensitive + non-respondent) you can do things like snap their thumbs, wrists or arms.
    ▪    John calls this “advanced Chin-na.” The difference between the GC way and the “kung fu” way of doing it is he is adapting and applying 2, 3 or more different angles to the wrench simultaneously so that the enemy can’t counter.
    ▪    He’ll then use the body as yet another wrench/angle/tool to set up the break and/or hit. All these parameters will change and adapt as needed so there is no set “locking technique” involved.
John emphasizes this is for a non-lethal situation because in general the object is to hit and penetrate, not control (like for bouncing).
    ▪    You may start with an extremely effective simple strike combination like Chop/Palm/Knee (“Prow”) from GC Combatives but it is the expression of it with GC principles that allows you to modify or abandon it as needed. Same with the CCUE (Close Combat Universal Entry).

    ▪    If you watch carefully (though it is not actually stated in this particular video – but it is in others) John makes full use of the principle that you train such that one arm can do the job of 2 so that you tend to have more weapons and defensive tools available than the opponent -- who will feel like he’s fighting someone with 3 or more arms.
    ▪    Don’t leave the thumb hanging out or using for grabs or it will be broken at high speed. Practice this slowly. Note that the thumb can be used as an antenna which means it is then sensitive enough to stay out of harm’s way.
