YOUR QUESTIONS

THE REAR NAKED CHOKE

QUESTION:

Hello! I have read your books and seen many of your dvds. Very good advice about self-protection! I wonder why you do not teach the rear naked choke in your combatives? If the opponent is under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or highly motivated then punches and kicks don't always have an effect. Then the RNC can be a very good option. WW2 combatives contained both kicks, blows, knees and chokes / strangles. My tactic is to first avoid then if that does not work, I try to diffuse and if it does not work then I will go to attack with preferably a blow on the chin and follow up with a knee, and if it does not have an effect, I try to take control of and attack the enemy's head, throat, neck and eyes to get to a choke / strangle. This tactic has worked very well for me. Then when I go to attack, it is with 100% aggression and force. What do you think of this tactic?

I would appreciate your response since you are very skilled. I have full Respect for what you teach. Thank you!

ANSWER:

Good question!

1) Just so you know where we're coming from. . . .
John Perkins used RNCs (or, in police talk, "Lateral Vascular Neck Restraint" or LVNR) a lot during his police career, often with other officers assisting to secure the limbs of the subject. He and many of his top students learned many variations and details of chokes and strangles, both from combatives and grappling perspectives. Some of the students you see in the videos mastered choking and strangling under some of the best in the business (e.g. Rickson, Royce and Renzo Gracie, Charlie Nelson, Carl Cestari). So we certainly know what you're talking about.

2) Details. . . . .
You're generally talking about two things when you talk about rear chokes/strangles:

a. The LVNR, which is basically the modern sport "blood choke" that puts a guy to sleep by putting pressure on both carotid arteries via the triangle formed by the choking arm (forearm on one side, bicep on the other). This is the "safe" version, because when done correctly, the airway is not threatened and nothing is permanently damaged. In reality, it's never 100% safe, as some people's arteries just don't open back up, it can damage the airway when applied incorrectly (or . . . during a struggle!), and weird things can happen (e.g. smothering the subject by lying on his back while applying the choke, or subject damages own neck while wildly thrashing to escape). That's why after a period of being sold as the "ultimate" compassionate control move, it's now banned in most police departments. It typically takes a long time (5-10 seconds as typically applied, maybe 3 seconds if you really know your stuff, depending on the dynamics and the neck of the subject) to apply, and the subject may be fully functional until the last second or two before he goes out.

b. The strangle, or "air choke". This can be gradual pressure applied directly to the airway in an effort to make the opponent tap out (SPORT ONLY), or any variation of extreme, quick, crushing force applied to the airway in an effort to quickly stop and likely kill the subject. This is the version that was emphasized in the WWII combative systems, often as a step within neck breaking methods, as well as most modern variations that are not concerned with police work or other "benevolent control" methods. Detailed variations of this I learned from Carl Cestari and his students enable very fast throat crushing and neck wrenching, with the most involved version exerting enough leverage to crush nearly any neck--provided you are able to SET UP THE RIGHT POSITION for a LONG ENOUGH TIME to execute the strangle!

3) And there's the rub, and the primary reason why we don't teach chokes and strangles as primary self-defense methods: No matter how "trick" the method, and no matter how good you are at it, any choke/strangle requires too much commitment in terms of time, effort, balance and motion to be a favored method when you're on your own in a chaotic violent situation. All chokes and strangles require you to, at least briefly (usually longer), commit your body and limbs to remaining attached to the subject, hindering your mobility and adaptability to the fluidly changing situation (e.g. multiple attackers, introduction of a weapon, movement within and enclosed/littered environment). That's dangerous. While you're choking a subject, rather than remaining uncommited and free to move and adapt while moving and striking and off-balancing, someone else could do you in, or the subject could do something unexpected that you may not be able to react to as quickly because you're commited to the choke.

Good example: A very powerful, experienced and skilled colleague of John's brought a psychotic subject under some control and tried to rear naked choke her out in a booking office (fairly controlled environment, single subject only). She picked up a pen or pencil and went for his eye so hard that the pen or pencil went straight through his hand that luckily was shielding his eyes. He released the choke and promptly elbowed her unconscious.

I don't want to invalidate your experience, as you've said that chokes/strangles have worked well for you. Good! Stay alive! Just want to point out the possible limitations. Chokes work best when the environment is controlled and you have team mates to control the subject while you choke him.

Everything we teach goes along with the principles of balance, looseness, sensitivity and body unity, yielding freedom of action and the ability to adapt. Anything that goes against these principles is suspect (not necessarily useless, just not optimal from our perspective). Choking, because of the level of commitment it requires, is not in line with the principles.

Hope this helps!

For life or death situations I teach quick neck breaks when swift elimination is necessary. I am not averse to using a sleeper hold but it is too slow for most real time, life and death altercations. Getting out of one is something we teach; the prevention of one is even more important to me.

KILL THE ENEMY:
Close Quarters Combat
for U.S. Military Personnel

"The Kill the Enemy video is the greatest work of modern combat of our time!
In the dirty bloody world of real combat there are no second place winners. In combat there is only Kill and come home. John trains you for just such an encounter. There is nothing in the world that can ever prepare you for the harsh cold reality of combat, but John Perkins has found a way to bridge the gap between school and real world no-holds-barred REALITY!"
--Captain Jonathan Edwards, 101st Airborne/Air Assault

POLITICALLY INCORRECT
HAND-TO-HAND COMBAT...?

In 1989, the RUSSIANS instituted a hand-to-hand combat methodology that far surpassed ours in terms of SIMPLICITY and EFFECTIVENESS. Ironically, it was nearly IDENTICAL to the system OUR military used--BACK IN WORLD WAR II!! WHAT HAPPENED?!!

Through a political process too convoluted and distressing to elaborate on here, over the years, our soldiers' hand-to-hand training has become convoluted, mis-directed, and relatively ineffective except under "sportive  or "competitive" (i.e. unrealistic) conditions.

KILL THE ENEMY is a simple video guide that does away with the boxing-grappling-locking nonsense that has become the "politically correct" standard of training for our soldiers in recent years. Instead of subjecting our military personnel to methods that could get them killed, Master Perkins and Lieutenent Colonel Ridenhour USMC provide basic, effective methods proven in World War II. Distilled from Part 1 of our book ATTACK PROOF, these strategies (Guided Chaos Combatives) are the basic tools that John Perkins' Guided Chaos builds upon. Topics include:

  • Comparison: US vs. Russian Hand-to-Hand Training
  • The Myth of Grappling
  • Defensive/Offensive Posture
  • Basic Hand Strikes
  • Bag/Dummy Training/10 Seconds of Hell
  • Wrestling the Rifle
  • Covering Your Back
  • A Fantasy Knife Fight
  • Rear Choke Scenarios
  • Ground Fighting Fantasies
  • Conclusion: History Doesn't Lie!

Do you really want to Mount or go into the Guard position against someone bigger and stronger than you?

YOUR INSTRUCTORS:

GM Perkins
Former forensic crime scene expert
John Perkins:

Perkins has trained in Native American "Anything Goes" fighting principles since the age of 5. Over a period of 20 years he combined it with experience gained from over 100 extremely violent arrests (where people routinely ended up in the hospital or morgue), unsanctioned pit-fighting, World War II Close Quarters Combat, the internal aspects of tai chi and the ancient Greek combat art of Elephtheri Pali. In 1978, he formally created Ki Chuan Do and the principles of Guided Chaos [in1998 he officially changed the name of the art itself to Guided Chaos]. Unlike the "fight-by-the-numbers" self-defense methods popular today, the Groundfighting component of GC is probably unlike anything you've ever seen before.

Blitz magazine article on Guided Chaos Australia Seminar
"
Let me start by saying I thought I'd seen all that the world of 'reality-based self defence' had to offer, so for the easily bored out there, I'll cut to the chase. What I witnessed on the weekend of 26 and 27 March is the closest thing I've come across that resembles a modern-day, reality-based martial art and not just another 'combatives system'. Does it work? Hell, yeah! I got my arse well and truly kicked and at times felt like I was in the middle of a Jason Bourne fight scene."
--Clive Girdham, former Senshido and Geoff Thompson instructor [excerpted from the exclusive review of the Guided Chaos Australia Seminar in the Aug. print edition of BLITZ MAGAZINE: Australia's #1 Martial Arts magazine volume 25, issue 6

"Guided Chaos is the only training in my 15 plus years of Corrections that translates into real world application, period."
---Bob Miller, Corrections Officer at the largest facility in Oregon

"Guided Chaos is the only thing that has worked for me in real life situations. Unless you are 6'3" and 285 lbs of muscle, most of the Defensive Tactics stuff (ok all of the Defensive Tactics stuff) will get you hurt. And even if you are that big and strong, there is always someone bigger and stronger and there may be a lot of them. Nothing like dealing with one guy and it turns into a free for all with all his buddies. This is where you literally need to 'adapt or die' and Guided Chaos is the only training in my 15 plus years of Corrections that translates into real world application, period.

"If I had to pick only one martial arts system in the world it would be Guided Chaos..."
--Dr. Robert L. O'Block founder and publisher of the American College of Forensic Examiners International, American Board for Certification in Homeland Security

reading Attackproof, the book, I have learned real survival skills.
These skills have been learned...at an exponentially higher practical
