  YOUR QUESTIONS...

HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR GC CONTACT FLOW

Q:
G'day all. Still very much training over here, and we have become increasingly fascinated with the Ghost Fist 'feel' and I was hoping if those who are willing can share some pointers, insights and training we can incorporate. I believe we are experiencing this more and more simply as a result of training principles and contact flow. Working on becoming more and more unavailable yet unavoidable. I think that the unavoidable is surpassing the unavailable.

We are attempting to correct this by utilising footwork [a root that can't be found--ed.], spike in the sponge [impale the enemy on your weapon as you yield--ed.], pocketing [isolated yiedling--ed.], off-lining, ghosting by transfer of feel on single contact point by replacing same feel with another limb, fake pressure to encourage opponent to oppose an 'expected' move that doesn't come [pulsing--ed.], dropping on back foot and being less 'sticky' in general.
I really do feel that we are connecting to this 'ghost fist' feel and would like to further this sense and skill. Thanks for any assistance

A: This is all great to hear but as is typical, the allure of offense in an environment where you're not really trying to seriously hurt your training partner tends to overshadow defensive development. I'd really focus on moving slowly and concentrating on Moving Behind the Guard. At every point of contact while moving with your partner, examine whether positionally you actually have something practical between his weapon and his intended target on you. You may be sticking to him but to the wrong part of him so that he has clear entry lines despite you're being in contact with him. It's not just being connected, it's about 'how' you're connected. This will require constantly changing the contact point and orientation as well as stepping behind your contact point so that his weapons remain on the outside of any entry line. This is ridiculously simple in concept but in execution people provide endless openings to the opponent because they're focused on 'winning' and so neglect this constant reorientation and humor themselves by thinking "well I'm still in contact...but he's hitting me anyway..." Remember: if you can't stop a strike at slow speed, you'll never do it at high speed.

Two things to practice also: Using one arm to connect with both of his (raises your versatility and sensitivity and forces you to step to stay behind your guard); and the "String" drill (a couple of Newsletters ago) where you stay in contact with the string, step and tool replace without disturbing it. As you develop your "guard" the challenge is to simultaneously bring weapons on line while staying protected.

FROM GM JOHN PERKINS:
To all distance learners and others--
I read a request from one of our distance learners from Australia who wanted to know how to improve on his ability to be unavailable yet unavoidable.

One of the best ways I personally have found to improve my own ability to be "ghostlike" was to teach the concept of Guided Chaos to women. This brought about a fundamental shift in understanding true sensitivity which at the same time increased my own ability to be more unavailable and unavoidable. The exact same feelings both mental and physical that is needed to move with very much larger opponents as well as smaller males are enhanced by moving slowly with almost any woman who knows the fundamentals of GC.

Over the years myself and Grand Master Tim Carron have worked diligently teaching and simultaneously learning to improve on our own abilities in fighting and teaching others by working with our female students. Killeen has been of great service in this area along with Jenny and Mary Anne since the 80s and early 90s. The newer ladies Leslie, Elaine, Jeanine, Tina, Kristy and Denise, who all are black belt level students, have been nearly indispensable to my own development as well as that of many of our male population.

Many of our top male instructors can give accounts of how some became instant converts to GC just from their first encounters with Killeen, Jenny or Mary Anne not to mention the great contributions to women's self defense they have made over the decades.

So...To answer the question of how men can increase their abilities in GC I strongly suggest getting women involved with your training. Even the presence of only one woman in a class of men brings up the sensitivity and other attributes for everyone especially the instructors.

Remember: teaching increases your ability, assuming that you are a competent teacher to begin with.

I am forwarding this to several of you directly and trust that you will benefit from it along with our newsletter subscribers. Any of you out there who have worked with our ladies please feel free to send me your comments and tell me your own experiences.

Thanks, John Perkins...Grand Master and Founder of Guided Chaos...November 26, 2012

 UK SEMINAR REVIEW
...AND SOME GREAT QUESTIONS

"That was fantastic, a real eye opener and Al, Joe and Kevin were excellent teachers and really down to earth."

"There was so much taught or touched on that the seminar was near perfect."

QUESTIONS:

"If there was anything, it would be closing the distance to where guided chaos works best from other people's preferred distances but that will come with practice anyway. Also, maybe getting out if someone gets the full mount on you.

Finally, how to get the mix right of spending slow flow time to faster-based flowing where the natural velocity of your movement changes things slightly.

But these suggestions are just grabbing at straws as it was excellent, I got a real buzz from it. Don't leave it too long before coming again." --Phil

ANSWERS:

Glad to hear it!

Distance:

You don't let any stranger or hostile relation into your Personal Comfort Zone (Sphere of influence). If you keep giving space and they keep taking it and you can't run, you attack the attacker.

If you're jumped and catch a glimpse or hear a sound the instant before they're on you, it's the Fright Reaction into basic GC Combatives. If they're highly skilled or too big and strong you'll segue instantly into GC (with training). With lots of training you'll respond with pure GC.
To close the gap initially you'd rapid fire drop front kicks (see Mexican Hat Dance in our books and Part 1 dvd or On Demand) or do Prow or CCUE.

With Contact Flow, you want to always be moving in at oblique angles. Never back up. This is even more important with bigger, longer-armed opponents so that you fight in your range with all weapons rather than his range with long range weapons. Al probably covered Collapsing the Sphere--see Weaseling and Taking their Space in Attack Proof 2nd edition for more info. Essentially you always step to your opening, taking your Sphere of Influence with you and remaining Behind the Guard the whole time (not to be confused with the "Guard" in MMA). In your Contact Flow practice, work to discover areas of lesser structure and step, Collapse and weasel into them to hit with your whole body.

The full mount: if you're doing things correctly it shouldn't happen in the first place. In MMA, people SEEK the mount (or the Guard) and so they wind up there because of a predisposition towards control and submit instead of penetrate and destroy. Too much to cover here but there's an unbelievable amount of info on this in our Groundfighting video (DVD or On Demand Download).

Contact Flow speed:

To eliminate speed and force as cheats and cop outs in your training, imagine a universe where the top speed is 1 mile per hour and the top force 1 pound. Now the only way you can hit and not be hit is through the development of superior Balance, Body Unity, Looseness, Sensitivity and Adaptability. You and your partner agree on your speed and force limits so everyone is on the same page: Super-slow, 1/4 speed, 1/2, etc. If you get hit at slow speed you'll never stop an enemy at full speed. You will learn fastest at slow speeds. When you're more advanced you can mix speeds or go fast but you never train at a speed beyond where you can sense what's going on (except briefly to experience panic--but there's little learning). [All this is covered in extreme detail on the 6 hour Eye of the Storm video (available as a DVD or On Demand Download)].

Hope this helps. Next opportunity for you guys would probably be another NY Boot Camp in 2013.

Hilarious!
Bouncer (kickbox world champion) vs Loudmouth

A guy wants to get into the club, and is not let in. What he doesn't know is: the bouncer he is annoying is Michael Kuhr - a 5x kickboxing world champion. And the bouncer has got a very important mobile number: the number of loudmouths brother.

"This ain't your daddy's iron palm bag!"

Develop crushing hand power for strikes and gouges

Instead of "toughening" your hands with a typical iron palm bag and possibly developing painful arthritis as well as thick, ugly, useless callouses, why not turn your hand strikes into "smart bombs" so that all your chops, punches, gouges, rips and tears explode with devastating crushing power and dead-on, free-form timing and accuracy! (The most overlooked qualities in hand weapon development).

The Guided Chaos method of strike training using Dropping Force greatly improves hand strength, timing, balance, and sudden impact power while simultaneously developing your tissue and tendon strength without creating ugly and useless "makiwara" callouses.

KILL THE ENEMY:
Close Quarters Combat
for U.S. Military Personnel

"The Kill the Enemy video is the greatest work of modern combat of our time!
In the dirty bloody world of real combat there are no second place winners. In combat there is only Kill and come home. John trains you for just such an encounter. There is nothing in the world that can ever prepare you for the harsh cold reality of combat, but John Perkins has found a way to bridge the gap between school and real world no-holds-barred REALITY!"
--Captain Jonathan Edwards, 101st Airborne/Air Assault

POLITICALLY INCORRECT
HAND-TO-HAND COMBAT...?

In 1989, the RUSSIANS instituted a hand-to-hand combat methodology that far surpassed ours in terms of SIMPLICITY and EFFECTIVENESS. Ironically, it was nearly IDENTICAL to the system OUR military used--BACK IN WORLD WAR II!! WHAT HAPPENED?!!

Through a political process too convoluted and distressing to elaborate on here, over the years, our soldiers' hand-to-hand training has become convoluted, mis-directed, and relatively ineffective except under "sportive  or "competitive" (i.e. unrealistic) conditions.

KILL THE ENEMY is a simple video guide that does away with the boxing-grappling-locking nonsense that has become the "politically correct" standard of training for our soldiers in recent years. Instead of subjecting our military personnel to methods that could get them killed, Master Perkins and Lieutenent Colonel Ridenhour USMC provide basic, effective methods proven in World War II. Distilled from Part 1 of our book ATTACK PROOF, these strategies (Guided Chaos Combatives) are the basic tools that John Perkins' Guided Chaos builds upon. Topics include:

  • Comparison: US vs. Russian Hand-to-Hand Training
  • The Myth of Grappling
  • Defensive/Offensive Posture
  • Basic Hand Strikes
  • Bag/Dummy Training/10 Seconds of Hell
  • Wrestling the Rifle
  • Covering Your Back
  • A Fantasy Knife Fight
  • Rear Choke Scenarios
  • Ground Fighting Fantasies

OUR CRITICS SAY:

"We can hit the eyes and throat too, so what's the difference?"

The difference is that we're better at it--as well as defending against it, because both require Sensitivity and Adaptation--something we train exclusively.

YOUR INSTRUCTORS:

GM Perkins
Former forensic crime scene expert
John Perkins:

Perkins has trained in Native American "Anything Goes" fighting principles since the age of 5. Over a period of 20 years he combined it with experience gained from over 100 extremely violent arrests (where people routinely ended up in the hospital or morgue), unsanctioned pit-fighting, World War II Close Quarters Combat, the internal aspects of tai chi and the ancient Greek combat art of Elephtheri Pali. In 1978, he formally created Ki Chuan Do and the principles of Guided Chaos [in1998 he officially changed the name of the art itself to Guided Chaos]. Unlike the "fight-by-the-numbers" self-defense methods popular today, the Groundfighting component of GC is probably unlike anything you've ever seen before.

Lt Col Ridenhour
Iraq and Afghanistan combat veteran
Lt. Col. Al Ridenhour USMC:

Infantry unit commander and instructor of unarmed combat, he is also a Guided Chaos Master. Security Manager, Assistant Operations Officer, and the Anti-Terrorism Force Protection Officer for the II Marine Expeditionary Force in Iraq. Blitz magazine article on Guided Chaos Australia Seminar
"
Let me start by saying I thought I'd seen all that the world of 'reality-based self defence' had to offer, so for the easily bored out there, I'll cut to the chase. What I witnessed on the weekend of 26 and 27 March is the closest thing I've come across that resembles a modern-day, reality-based martial art and not just another 'combatives system'. Does it work? Hell, yeah! I got my arse well and truly kicked and at times felt like I was in the middle of a Jason Bourne fight scene."
--Clive Girdham, former Senshido and Geoff Thompson instructor [excerpted from the exclusive review of the Guided Chaos Australia Seminar in the Aug. print edition of BLITZ MAGAZINE: Australia's #1 Martial Arts magazine volume 25, issue 6

"Guided Chaos is the only training in my 15 plus years of Corrections that translates into real world application, period."
---Bob Miller, Corrections Officer at the largest facility in Oregon

"Guided Chaos is the only thing that has worked for me in real life situations. Unless you are 6'3" and 285 lbs of muscle, most of the Defensive Tactics stuff (ok all of the Defensive Tactics stuff) will get you hurt. And even if you are that big and strong, there is always someone bigger and stronger and there may be a lot of them. Nothing like dealing with one guy and it turns into a free for all with all his buddies. This is where you literally need to 'adapt or die' and Guided Chaos is the only training in my 15 plus years of Corrections that translates into real world application, period.

"If I had to pick only one martial arts system in the world it would be Guided Chaos..."
--Dr. Robert L. O'Block founder and publisher of the American College of Forensic Examiners International, American Board for Certification in Homeland Security

"...through watching videos put out by attackproof.com, and by
reading Attackproof, the book, I have learned real survival skills.
These skills have been learned...at an exponentially higher practical
yield-per-hour training rate than any other martial art classes or
seminar I've ever attended, or ever even heard rumor of."
