  "THE HANDS-ON IS INCREDIBLE!"

That's what students are saying about the new  ELMSFORD GC HEADQUARTERS

"THE LEARNING GOES INTO TREMENDOUS DEPTH!"

"...We're also doing things in class I've only read about in the book or seen on the DVDs which is definitely more helpful to my training. I really like that we go over the Combat Conditioning exercises on a consistent basis 'cause you can train at home but it's another thing when you're actually here, plus the facility has all the tools so I definitely like that. The hands-on is incredible!"
--Scott W.

"YOU REALLY WANT TO COME HERE!"

"The classes are great…they're very comprehensive. I feel like I've learned more in the last few weeks than I've learned in the last 5 months. I feel like I'm getting a private class every night! We get right down to business…I think it's fantastic. If you're really serious about GC and you want to get better, you really want to come here."
--Santino T.

  FIGHTING FOR YOUR LIFE:

Can You Flow Under Adrenaline Stress While Controlling Fear?
By Lt Col Al Ridenhour USMC

QUESTION:

I thought a recent email I received could be expanded into a Newsletter article with some additional information since it asks a question that comes up frequently. I think it provides some insight into the differences between training in an adaptive free flowing methodology as opposed to a technique--oriented situation-based system.  The basic question is:

“While under Adrenal Stress, being calm, relaxed and fluid is usually the opposite physiological effect experienced by a person. How would you respond?"

ANSWER:
Can you remain loose and “calm” under the extreme duress of a real fight? Great question!

Again, it’s something that comes up often with new students in our schools and something that I feel is greatly misunderstood.

What we have people focus on in training is learning to develop their bodies to the point where they just “react” when the feces hits the oscillating device so the speak.

The stiffness and tension people feel are not due primarily to stress while under adrenaline but to being disconnected from their bodies on a neural-muscular-mental level in at least 3 ways:

1. Moral Confusion.

When you learn half-measures like locking and grappling that don't have the intrinsic purpose of killing the enemy you instinctively feel real fear. This is because you intuitively KNOW that if you were fighting to save the life of your wife or child you would claw the attacker's eyes out and bite through his windpipe instead of "submitting" him or making him cry "uncle".

Understand this: if you are not prepared to do what is necessary there is a good chance that you will die. There should be no ambiguity about this: you’re either in the fight or you’re not.  Now we’re not talking about engaging in mindless battle, or seeking out fights in establishments that you probably have no business being at in the first place, but learning to have an adult, mature understanding of the difference between fighting for your life versus trying to prove some macho point.  When you learn to walk away from stupid fights, what you have left are the ones where you must fight or die. That creates a new dynamic without any moral confusion because it clarifies your options: fight or die.

2. Ruthless Intention / Channeled Fear.

Learning to focus your mind on exploding into your attacker with utter ruthlessness either through training or by imagining being in a deadly situation (such as performing the “Channeled Fear Meditation” exercise in our book or on the Attackproof Companion Part 1 DVD) helps you put your adrenaline to practical use instead of locking up your mind and body with useless "mind chatter" (i.e., this can’t be happening, etc…).

Such hesitation only serves to delay your response, whether it is to strike, or move off line while delivering on them simultaneously.

Remember: the only reason you are fighting at all is because the situation either couldn’t be avoided or there is no other alternative (i.e., a home invasion) and at that point there are only two things: your sword and their sword and nothing else. If left with that option you need to have the moral will to strike in a manner to ensure your sword prevails in battle.

3. Develop the Neural-Muscular path through which the Adrenaline can flow without restriction.

When contrived, flowery, sportive or "politically correct" systems have your body moving in a manner that it is either not capable of at high speed (i.e., overly-structured movement) or in a manner where the proper level of coordination (body unity) has not been developed, you will freeze under adrenal stress.

If your brain has not been trained to adapt to ever-changing stimuli in a completely free-form, improvisatory manner, it quickly becomes overwhelmed and either “locks up” or it tries to revert back to what it is comfortable with even if it doesn’t work.

This is why when we speak of remaining loose we are speaking not only of the physical state or neural muscular relaxation but of the mental state and not closing your mind off to what is possible based on what you can perceive through your senses.

I also want to point out that the looseness as developed in Guided Chaos is not like limp spaghetti but more like spring steel: ready to move in any direction at any time with resilient flowing and explosive power.  This is primarily achieved through the development of proper balance for combat or what we refer to as Dynamic Balance, which allows this type of movement to work.

This doesn’t mean we focus on developing mystical mind power.

Instead, we open your mind to what is possible with the bodies we were born with. This is accomplished through focusing on principles of body movement dynamics rooted in physics and human physiology and not on patterned, contrived, one-size-fits-all techniques that exist only in the dojo or sportive venues.

There are gussied-up classical styles out there that earnestly attempt to modernize them by stripping out excessive form and boiling them down to fighting basics. This is laudable. The problem is, although the styles may have worked for their creators, that was countless generations ago and the systems have since morphed over the centuries into stylized, highly formatted and structured mass learning systems.

Guided Chaos was created from the very beginning to be formless, fluid and adaptive to whatever is thrown at you:

It can't be stylized because it has no style.
It can't be overly structured because it has no forms.
All it is concerned with is powerful, dynamic movement.

And if you're still confused, you can always check with its creator, who is still around.

Granted, learning Guided Chaos takes time (but far less than with other internal systems). But that doesn't mean you can't apply the principles stated above (Moral Clarity, Ruthless Intention / Channeled Fear and Adaptation) to simplified striking.

For example, with WWII-based Guided Chaos Combatives (GCC), while the movements are simple, deadly and easy to learn, what separates what we teach from other methods is that we develop not just techniques for hitting but the proper body movement dynamics so that you can adapt if necessary in the heat of battle.  Yes, this is not as effective as being able to create ANY defense you need, when you need it (as with pure GC), but it does means you can use simplified deadly striking (chop, palm, gouge, knee, elbow) under extreme adrenaline dump and adapt THOSE to whatever is thrown at you without trying to remember some highly specific cool move for a specific attack.

When other methods that I have seen focus exclusively on a tremendous repertoire of techniques with the assumption that they are going to either get the drop on everyone or that the bad guy is going to move as they have practiced, my question always is: if someone were trying to kill you, would you give them a chance to do it?  Or would you move in a manner to prevent it? So why practice in an unrealistic manner in the first place?

What I and many of our students (especially those in law enforcement) have found is that by training to adapt to the ever-changing chaos of a real fight, that when they have had to go into action--no matter how intense the situation--they somehow just reacted in a way that allowed them to do whatever they had to do with little or no thought. Whatever tension arises is minimal in nature and of little effect.

This is the byproduct of practicing Contact and Combat Flow as well as all the attribute drills, which focus on principles rather than techniques as outlined in our DVDs and books.

We like to think of a real fight as being like a dogfight: no question that the two dogs are moving with 100% intensity.  The difference is they fight on such an “instinctive” level that they are able to focus their aggression in a way that benefits, rather than hinders them.

Often students who’ve been attacked with machetes, bats, knives and axes have stated that everything seems to happen in slow motion or like they were watching themselves move in the third person.

Let's look at this more deeply.

The reason I believe that people, especially those with some form of martial training (including fire arms) tend to lock up in a fight or get tunnel vision is because in the split second they have to react, their minds become overloaded with sensory information that cannot be processed at the cognitive level. When a million techniques come to mind at once the question becomes: “Will I pick the right one?” The attack may not even be one you have trained for. It’s like having a lock in one pocket, a thousand keys in the other and not even knowing if any of them will fit--with only a microsecond to find out.

Or think of it like this: you’re driving in your car and you see a ball or kid enter the roadway.  If you had to “think” of the 50 things that run through your brain at once that allow you to avoid running the kid over, you’d never be able to respond fast enough: calculate distance, speed, traction; turn the wheel, hit the brake, avoid the embankment, other cars, that tree…etc.  Yet somehow you just “do it”.  This is because the physical act of driving is a subconscious activity with little cognitive thought involved.  Sure, you know you are driving the car and where you are going, but the actual act of driving, once you learn how, becomes second nature.

This is what the Guided Chaos training methods are designed to do: allow you to function at a high level with the fine motor coordination that you are generally capable of at slower speeds with a focused mind, while under the extreme duress of a blood bath to the death. This doesn’t mean that your emotions don’t run wild or that you are going to react with perfect “Zen-like” calm, but that your body is able to function as fast as humanly possible with little to no drag caused by antagonistic muscles slowing you down. How? Chaotic GC Looseness Drills (Companion Part 2 DVD or Download) get you to move loosely in a free-form way so that under duress your brain doesn't "vapor lock" looking for a loose "patterned" response.

Chaotic GC Balance Drills (Companion Part 2 DVD or Download) train you to be loose while on balance--without patterned "balance" exercises (otherwise your brain would anticipate only being on balance within those patterns). And Sensitivity Drills let you read the attacker's movements (instead
of expecting him to move like they do in the dojo).

The contradiction between how a real attacker moves, compared to how your "attacker" moves in the dojo creates real life brain freeze.

Now there are those who will tell you that it’s impossible to remain loose under such conditions or move with such fine motor coordination.  Not true!  It’s not that it is impossible—it’s that “they” can’t do it because they have the wrong training methodology.

Just through my own training and experiences I personally believe that 90% - 95% percent of what we think we understand about body movement dynamics for real fighting is all wrong. These wrong assumptions about how real fights go down have lead to the development of many flawed systems and techniques that, while they seem plausible (and look cool), are as far from the truth as Heaven is to Hell.

Yes, elite athletes can make them work.  But the truth is, it’s not that the techniques are good; it’s that they have enough physical ability and talent to make them work.  In other words they make it work in spite of the technique or system’s flaws.

I know this was long but I wanted to provide you with as thorough an answer as I could.  Thanks again for your question and please feel free to contact me any time.

"This Ain't Your Daddy's Iron Palm Bag!"

  GUIDED CHAOS™ BRANDED SLAMBAGS

Develop accurate, crushing, hand power for strikes and gouges

"As soon as I began using it, I was HOOKED! ...I have long practiced grasping/striking activities against heavy bags and using different hand grips - round balls, piston push grips, etc. However, the Slam bag supersedes ALL of these in my opinion. It does it ALL and more. Just passing it from left to right hands and clawing it - either sideways or pancake style helps create strength and coordination...I even surprised myself at how overwhelmed I was as soon as I started using it." --David H. Smith, Student of Professor Bradley Steiner

Instead of "toughening" your hands with a typical iron palm bag and possibly developing painful arthritis as well as thick, ugly, useless callouses, why not turn your hand strikes into "smart bombs" so that all your chops, punches, gouges, rips and tears explode with devastating crushing power and dead-on, free-form timing and accuracy! (The most overlooked qualities in hand weapon development).
The Guided Chaos method of strike training using Dropping Force greatly improves hand strength, timing, balance, and sudden impact power while simultaneously developing your tissue and tendon strength without creating ugly and useless "makiwara" callouses. Get your tough, tan, double-stitched cowhide SLAMBAG with the GC logo hot-branded on both sides and start hitting like a jackhammer.

KILL THE ENEMY:
Close Quarters Combat
for U.S. Military Personnel

"The Kill the Enemy video is the greatest work of modern combat of our time!
In the dirty bloody world of real combat there are no second place winners. In combat there is only Kill and come home. John trains you for just such an encounter. There is nothing in the world that can ever prepare you for the harsh cold reality of combat, but John Perkins has found a way to bridge the gap between school and real world no-holds-barred REALITY!"
--Captain Jonathan Edwards, 101st Airborne/Air Assault

POLITICALLY INCORRECT
HAND-TO-HAND COMBAT...?

In 1989, the RUSSIANS instituted a hand-to-hand combat methodology that far surpassed ours in terms of SIMPLICITY and EFFECTIVENESS. Ironically, it was nearly IDENTICAL to the system OUR military used--BACK IN WORLD WAR II!! WHAT HAPPENED?!!

Through a political process too convoluted and distressing to elaborate on here, over the years, our soldiers' hand-to-hand training has become convoluted, mis-directed, and relatively ineffective except under "sportive  or "competitive" (i.e. unrealistic) conditions.

KILL THE ENEMY is a simple video guide that does away with the boxing-grappling-locking nonsense that has become the "politically correct" standard of training for our soldiers in recent years. Instead of subjecting our military personnel to methods that could get them killed, Master Perkins and Lieutenent Colonel Ridenhour USMC provide basic, effective methods proven in World War II. Distilled from Part 1 of our book ATTACK PROOF, these strategies (Guided Chaos Combatives) are the basic tools that John Perkins' Guided Chaos builds upon. Topics include:

  • Comparison: US vs. Russian Hand-to-Hand Training
  • The Myth of Grappling
  • Defensive/Offensive Posture
  • Basic Hand Strikes
  • Bag/Dummy Training/10 Seconds of Hell
  • Wrestling the Rifle
  • Covering Your Back

YOUR INSTRUCTORS:

GM Perkins
Former forensic crime scene expert
John Perkins:

Perkins has trained in Native American "Anything Goes" fighting principles since the age of 5. Over a period of 20 years he combined it with experience gained from over 100 extremely violent arrests (where people routinely ended up in the hospital or morgue), unsanctioned pit-fighting, World War II Close Quarters Combat, the internal aspects of tai chi and the ancient Greek combat art of Elephtheri Pali. In 1978, he formally created Ki Chuan Do and the principles of Guided Chaos [in1998 he officially changed the name of the art itself to Guided Chaos]. Unlike the "fight-by-the-numbers" self-defense methods popular today, the Groundfighting component of GC is probably unlike anything you've ever seen before.

Lt. Col. Al Ridenhour USMC:

Infantry unit commander and instructor of unarmed combat, he is also a Guided Chaos Master. Security Manager, Assistant Operations Officer, and the Anti-Terrorism Force Protection Officer for the II Marine Expeditionary Force in Iraq. Blitz magazine article on Guided Chaos Australia Seminar
"
Let me start by saying I thought I'd seen all that the world of 'reality-based self defence' had to offer, so for the easily bored out there, I'll cut to the chase. What I witnessed on the weekend of 26 and 27 March is the closest thing I've come across that resembles a modern-day, reality-based martial art and not just another 'combatives system'. Does it work? Hell, yeah! I got my arse well and truly kicked and at times felt like I was in the middle of a Jason Bourne fight scene."
--Clive Girdham, former Senshido and Geoff Thompson instructor [excerpted from the exclusive review of the Guided Chaos Australia Seminar in the Aug. print edition of BLITZ MAGAZINE: Australia's #1 Martial Arts magazine volume 25, issue 6

"Guided Chaos is the only training in my 15 plus years of Corrections that translates into real world application, period."
---Bob Miller, Corrections Officer at the largest facility in Oregon

"Guided Chaos is the only thing that has worked for me in real life situations. Unless you are 6'3" and 285 lbs of muscle, most of the Defensive Tactics stuff (ok all of the Defensive Tactics stuff) will get you hurt. And even if you are that big and strong, there is always someone bigger and stronger and there may be a lot of them. Nothing like dealing with one guy and it turns into a free for all with all his buddies. This is where you literally need to 'adapt or die' and Guided Chaos is the only training in my 15 plus years of Corrections that translates into real world application, period.
