EVERYONE KNOWS MMA IS THE WAY TO GO
...RIGHT?

By guest author James Ludwig*
You want to practice martial arts in the interest of self-defense. Your friends matter-of-factly say that MMA is the only way to go.

But have you taken note of the INJURIES in MMA? In the UFC, something like nine major fights have been canned this calendar year due to injuries.

Understand that these injuries did not occur during competition; these were TRAINING injuries. And many of them were life disruptive, like broken ribs and blown knees, requiring expensive surgery and extensive recovery time.

Think about it: in the interest of self-preservation, do you want to under-take a form of training which nearly guarantees you will injure yourself?

That makes no sense at all! And the older you are, the less so…

The alternative is Guided Chaos: internal martial arts taught in a realistic self-defense context, resulting in a high level of preparation for street assaults with the risk of injury dialed nearly to zero.

With that in mind, consider this: Have you noticed how boxers and MMA fighters warm up extensively before fighting? Warming up is supposed to reduce the risk of injury. But in a street assault, you will have NO time to warm up. You will be walking down the street and then before your nervous system has the time to digest what is happening, you will have to defend yourself.

If professionals get to warm up before a fight, how are you going to function with no warm up at all? This is not a trick question. Rather, it is designed to make an important point when picking a training discipline: good self-defense training develops a martial self that doesn't have to warm up in order to function. How? Through the development of "internal arts" - looseness, balance, root power, mobility, and a refined nervous system that doesn't freeze when the sh#t hits the fan.

The ability to adapt intelligently to an unpredictable street attack is worth much more than memorizing the overly stylized techniques of the traditional arts. And it prepares you better for a real attack than MMA training does, with a much lower chance of life-altering injuries.

Make sure you grasp the implications of this before you finalize your decision on which martial art you are going to train in!

*James Ludwig trained extensively in aikido but abandoned the testing process at the first kyu level because it was hampering his martial development. Instead, Ludwig worked "off mat" with high ranking aikido and bagua artists in a free-form style, dumping conventional choreography and technique memorization. Subsequently he has also trained with practitioners of various arts/sports - BJJ, muay thai, boxing, wing chun. Ludwig has used the art of Guided Chaos to inform, validate, and organize his training practice and to maximize internal skills within the context of street-realistic self-defense.

"I just watched like 4 minutes of the new GCC video. WOW. I've been using and training GCC since 2000 and GC since 2003. You guys know my story:) I'm actually speechless. It's that good and has evolved that much! Just the little course correction, I watched on the GCC chop (saying hi) is a gold mine and could be a life saver when fractions of a second count. I'm very honored to be considered part of the GC family. I'm so impressed that you never stop refining and finding ways to make this art teachable to all kinds of people.

Love you guys, Bob"
