 YOUR QUESTIONS: LOCKS AND HOLDS

QUESTION:

The whole area of breaking out of holds and locks
or chokes etc., is a very fraught one indeed. Perhaps my greatest concern
with martial arts teachers is the exaggerated faith they place in their
particular solutions. I once defied a so called expert to apply a wrist
lock to a punch delivered at full speed (he was well protected in suitable
body armour). Of course he missed the incoming arm completely, despite
knowing in advance that I would throw a straight right to the head. My
second concern is the "one size fits all" with regard to escaping
from locks etc. I'll be interested in you remarks and what your
approach has come up with.

ANSWER:
Exactly. Instead of further engaging yourself, the goal is always to
strike repeatedly to a lethal target with whatever weapon is free. If you
train to lock or submit, you will always wind up locked to the enemy--and
then have to disengage anyway. If you train for disengagement in the first
place--what GM Perkins calls "being both unavailable and unavoidable"--you
will virtually always have weapons free. This is a radical concept in
martial arts (but not in nature), which is why we're controversial.

 TRAINING YOUR MIND
  by GM Perkins

When performing or practicing the "inner" work remember it is only using imagination to connect with the body on a subconscious level. There is no hocus pocus to this. Picturing is one way of getting deeper into the workings of the hyper speed subconscious abilities that we all have. Most people don't go into this. There are charlatans who will exploit the process using basic hypnotic methodology to get some result. The best results come from the practitioner practicing sensitivity on their own. It is sometimes difficult to shut off the beta mind while training but it is essential to acquire the hyper-sensitivity needed to work in a seemingly mindless state. I have found that basic meditation helps to relax the mind in general.

As I said, you don't have to go to a Buddhist retreat for days on end to acquire a meditative state for training. It really is as simple as I describe. You just need the patience for it. Feeling the subtle vibration of a partner is a first step to getting what looks like pre cognition. Tai Chi masters will have a person study this like a religion but it is just as unneccessary as doing the 145 Yang Tai Chi moves for fighting.

All the jiberish about keeping the mind occupied with a particular excercise is also not applicable here. Sometimes I just stand in place and slow down my breathing and imagine moving with multiple opponents and using my entire body in the vision to strike, unbalance or evade imaginary enemies while not even moving. This is sort of like how faith works. As you think so it becomes.

You can imagine your steps to be thousands of pounds heavy while walking effortlessly and slowly. When moving with a partner keep that thought and no matter what happens feel the weight of the feet even if you are thrown.

See where you can become more subtle. Put aside even the slightest  competitive thoughts no matter how tiny the voice inside seems to make it. Do not judge yourself. It is like having an over self or as it is called in psychology, a super ego. Not an Uber ego just a label to the part of consciousness that looks on as an observer. With enough practice this can be relaxed and free movement can occur.

As I teach I move you or any student in the way that will cause them to react with more balance and timing etc. I also engage the ego with jokes and  mirth to keep the judge at bay. Observing visually and kinesthetically what I am doing is good but to go far deeper takes what I call tiny listening. I listen with my whole body as I see. The information comes to me as pulses and sometimes I feel like I fall in between the pulses and have a lot more room both in space and time. NO I am not very spiritual and yet it seems that the energy moving inside me and my opponents is thinner than a gossamer thread but as strong as a bridge cable. I can't stop a heartbeat with electric eel energy but I can touch at the right time to cause serious interruption to the signal to the heart if need be.

Movement outwardly looks athletic and balletic but that is a by product of letting go and allowing the principle to work without blocking the mental goal/picture that happens automatically. Just a picture of an end result at split second time will often result in a completed action. Release the bonds of direction and just picture what is needed. One thing though: the best pictures come from the subconscious.

I hope this helps. My teacher often jokingly called me a man of knowledge. I often tried to outwit him and sometimes thought it worked but he had patience beyond mine. He always thought in terms of forever. Again no religion just energy/spirit. Spirit is just a finer form of thought energy.

Blitz magazine article on Guided Chaos Australia Seminar
"
Let me start by saying I thought I'd seen all that the world of 'reality-based self defence' had to offer, so for the easily bored out there, I'll cut to the chase. What I witnessed on the weekend of 26 and 27 March is the closest thing I've come across that resembles a modern-day, reality-based martial art and not just another 'combatives system'. Does it work? Hell, yeah! I got my arse well and truly kicked and at times felt like I was in the middle of a Jason Bourne fight scene."
--Clive Girdham, former Senshido and Geoff Thompson instructor [excerpted from the exclusive review of the Guided Chaos Australia Seminar in the Aug. print edition of BLITZ MAGAZINE: Australia's #1 Martial Arts magazine volume 25, issue 6

"Guided Chaos is the only training in my 15 plus years of Corrections that translates into real world application, period."
---Bob Miller, Corrections Officer at the largest facility in Oregon

"Guided Chaos is the only thing that has worked for me in real life situations. Unless you are 6'3" and 285 lbs of muscle, most of the Defensive Tactics stuff (ok all of the Defensive Tactics stuff) will get you hurt. And even if you are that big and strong, there is always someone bigger and stronger and there may be a lot of them. Nothing like dealing with one guy and it turns into a free for all with all his buddies. This is where you literally need to 'adapt or die' and Guided Chaos is the only training in my 15 plus years of Corrections that translates into real world application, period.

"If I had to pick only one martial arts system in the world it would be Guided Chaos..."
--Dr. Robert L. O'Block founder and publisher of the American College of Forensic Examiners International, American Board for Certification in Homeland Security

"...through watching videos put out by attackproof.com, and by
reading Attackproof, the book, I have learned real survival skills.
These skills have been learned...at an exponentially higher practical
yield-per-hour training rate than any other martial art classes or
seminar I've ever attended, or ever even heard rumor of."
--Matthew Shoener, Police Officer, Scranton, PA

"The Companion Video Part One is stupendous!
A godsend of detail for out-of-state practitioners."
--Mark from Chicago
