  YOUR QUESTIONS...

THE BOX STEP

Q:
I am trying to do the box step, and I am confused about some of the footwork. Should both feet land simultaneously, or should one land one foot at a time? Also, should both feet leave the ground at the same time or not? Gliding is difficult with both feet off the ground.

A:

Thanks for the question. You take off and land one foot at a time. Key point is to begin and land without any foot twist whatsoever--this requires a lot of hip rotation on take off. You want to move like a cat with no hopping.

Q:
So I glide and place one foot, then place the other foot without twisting either foot/ankle?

A:
Essentially it's a 1-2 step for a 90 degree Box Step and a soft low leaping 1-2 step for the 180 and 270. So if you're in a left lead and box-stepping to a point directly opposite (a 180) you're rear (right) foot comes up first as you twist counter clockwise and it lands first becoming the new front foot; your formerly front (left) foot comes up second and lands second and becomes the new rear foot. You should now be facing back in the direction you started. If you get the Companion Part 2  (DVD or On Demand Digital Download) you will see this all instantly and completely along with other tips.

The Box Step is critical for developing unitized, balanced, full body power with grace (chi). Most systems will isolate power to just arm strength or just waist twist strength or just foot pivot strength. Additionally, because of trained rigidity, you would never, ever develop your full power potential. You need to bring the entire body to bear and the Box Step encourages this, whether your step is large or just an inch.

DROPPING AND "FRICTION"?

Q:
Hi Matt: You know I think your methods are the best, however, I hope you don't mind my voicing some skepticism about the method by which dropping energy works. This is really a purely academic discussion, as it does not affect the application, just the explanation as to how it might work. I enjoy questions of physics, having studied it in school up to the master's degree level. But of course in no way does that make me right or wrong, just that I have thought a little about mechanics type questions.

If I understand your explanation correctly (please tell me if I have it wrong), when you drop and strike (almost) simultaneously, you "strike the floor" with all your weight through your feet. The floor then reacts back with an equal and opposite rebound force that sends a wave of energy through your body and eventually into the striking hand (or body part) to the target. Here is a more simple explanation. When you drop, you are greatly increasing your weight in that instant of contact with the ground.

From physics, we know that the friction force between the ground and your feet is proportional to your weight. So in that instant of dropping, your friction force with the  ground is much greater. This huge friction force between your feet and the ground effectively "glues" your feet to the ground in the instant of the strike. The force with which you can push off the ground with your feet is then greatly increased in that instant. Moreover, in the instant of the strike, you momentarily "lock" your body into a brick (immediately releasing it after the strike). This locking of your body effectively unifies your body to the ground in the instant of the strike. What you are doing is transmitting your instantaneously increased weight from your feet into the strike.

I think an experiment can test what is happening. If dropping energy is a rebound wave from the ground into your feet into your body as you say (unless I am not understanding it correctly), then it should not depend on the friction force between the ground and your feet. Just stand on an icy surface. Add some extra water (or oil) to reduce the friction even more. Then strike with dropping. Regardless of whether you fall afterwards, if it is rebound energy, the power of the strike should not be affected by the loss of friction. If the explanation is more along the lines that I have described above, then you should lose most of your power when you are working on a very slippery  surface.

A:
Thanks for your question and glad you're giving it a lot of thought, it all helps with your development. However, though you are partly correct, you're missing a key point: there is no friction involved because you always Drop perpendicular to the ground. Anything other than 90 degrees and you risk slipping and falling on your butt and having your head kicked in. As we say in our book, this is why Dropping is so effective on ice, oil or blood: by Dropping straight down, the oil or blood is displaced. We've had cops fight for their lives against multiple attackers on black ice and because of Dropping properly applied, they delivered crippling knockout power strikes to the criminals--while the criminals had no power, slipped and fell into each other.

Q:
Thank you very much for your answer. Sorry that I missed that
discussion in the book. To be honest, I only have the first edition. I should get the second edition. Dropping perpendicular to the ground will certainly increase stability by supporting the center of gravity even if you lose frictional contact with the ground.  And, as you point out, friction is increased by displacing fluid under the feet.

I must admit, however, that I am still curious as to how much friction
plays a role here, even when we are dropping perpendicular to the ground. In most situations where the floor is not slippery, it seems to me that friction helps with the power of the strike. But how much of the power is ultimately frictional and how much is rebound energy? We could test this by seeing how much force a high level practitioner such are yourself can generate on a very slippery surface?

Another question that comes up is
do we consciously modify the mechanics of striking with dropping when we are on a slippery surface? (If you have already dealt with this topic in your latest edition, then just please tell me, and I will go look it up there. No reason to repeat the discussion for me again.)

A:
Traction always helps but the point is: how do you get power to save
your life when it's not available? A power meter employed on a skating ring would be interesting but unecessary. Your body acts as a conduit and directs the force straight down. An unskilled person would send it into the ground at a greater than 90 degree angle and slide backwards.

Q:
Good point Matt. I think Guided Chaos dropping power is very different
than power generation in any other system, as you know much better than I do. Thanks.

A:
It's actually used in many sports and even tai chi (potentially) but most don't
recognize it or really understand it. There is also a crude drop-hit which is what Jack Dempsey used (hit on the Drop instead of the rebound). Interestingly, Ali unconsciously used a rebound Drop hit (like in GC) when he was backpedaling, planted, and knocked out Sonny Liston. John recognized it in the film.

Q:
This looks like what you are talking about:

Thanks again for your great answers.

THE MOST IMPORTANT SELF DEFENSE WEAPON IN EXISTENCE...

Q:
Recently, I purchased your book How to Fight for Your Life on Kindle. I have used the first edition of Attack Proof for a few years now. In How to Fight.... you say that a planned assassination is impossible to defend against. Can you go into more detail about this?

A:
With a mugging or assault the intent is to get something from you or take you somewhere or just intimidate/and or beat you up, not kill you in the most quick, silent and efficient method possible. Of course a sniper's rifle is the ideal here but we're talking about a bare handed or knife/handgun attack.

In order to mount an effective self-defense you need at least some slight warning (visual, aural or intuitional combined with the attacker's desire to not kill you outright (in the manner stated above) in order to respond. So if someone can sneak up on you without you seeing or hearing them and either strike a lethal target (neck, throat, etc.) hard enough or employ a strangling neck break (applied ballistically like a strike), there is not a self defense system in the world that can save you (unlike in the movies).

This is why the most important self defense tool in existence is AWARENESS.

SLAM BAGS BACK IN STOCK

"This ain't your daddy's iron palm bag!"

Develop crushing hand power for strikes and gouges

Instead of "toughening" your hands with a typical iron palm bag and possibly developing painful arthritis as well as thick, ugly, useless callouses, why not turn your hand strikes into "smart bombs" so that all your chops, punches, gouges, rips and tears explode with devastating crushing power and dead-on, free-form timing and accuracy! (The most overlooked qualities in hand weapon development).

The Guided Chaos method of strike training using Dropping Force greatly improves hand strength, timing, balance, and sudden impact power while simultaneously developing your tissue and tendon strength without creating ugly and useless "makiwara" callouses.

KILL THE ENEMY:
Close Quarters Combat
for U.S. Military Personnel

"The Kill the Enemy video is the greatest work of modern combat of our time!
In the dirty bloody world of real combat there are no second place winners. In combat there is only Kill and come home. John trains you for just such an encounter. There is nothing in the world that can ever prepare you for the harsh cold reality of combat, but John Perkins has found a way to bridge the gap between school and real world no-holds-barred REALITY!"
--Captain Jonathan Edwards, 101st Airborne/Air Assault

POLITICALLY INCORRECT
HAND-TO-HAND COMBAT...?

In 1989, the RUSSIANS instituted a hand-to-hand combat methodology that far surpassed ours in terms of SIMPLICITY and EFFECTIVENESS. Ironically, it was nearly IDENTICAL to the system OUR military used--BACK IN WORLD WAR II!! WHAT HAPPENED?!!

Through a political process too convoluted and distressing to elaborate on here, over the years, our soldiers' hand-to-hand training has become convoluted, mis-directed, and relatively ineffective except under "sportive  or "competitive" (i.e. unrealistic) conditions.

KILL THE ENEMY is a simple video guide that does away with the boxing-grappling-locking nonsense that has become the "politically correct" standard of training for our soldiers in recent years. Instead of subjecting our military personnel to methods that could get them killed, Master Perkins and Lieutenent Colonel Ridenhour USMC provide basic, effective methods proven in World War II. Distilled from Part 1 of our book ATTACK PROOF, these strategies (Guided Chaos Combatives) are the basic tools that John Perkins' Guided Chaos builds upon. Topics include:

  • Comparison: US vs. Russian Hand-to-Hand Training
  • The Myth of Grappling
  • Defensive/Offensive Posture
  • Basic Hand Strikes
  • Bag/Dummy Training/10 Seconds of Hell
  • Wrestling the Rifle

YOUR INSTRUCTORS:

GM Perkins
Former forensic crime scene expert
John Perkins:

Perkins has trained in Native American "Anything Goes" fighting principles since the age of 5. Over a period of 20 years he combined it with experience gained from over 100 extremely violent arrests (where people routinely ended up in the hospital or morgue), unsanctioned pit-fighting, World War II Close Quarters Combat, the internal aspects of tai chi and the ancient Greek combat art of Elephtheri Pali. In 1978, he formally created Ki Chuan Do and the principles of Guided Chaos [in1998 he officially changed the name of the art itself to Guided Chaos]. Unlike the "fight-by-the-numbers" self-defense methods popular today, the Groundfighting component of GC is probably unlike anything you've ever seen before.

Lt Col Ridenhour
Iraq and Afghanistan combat veteran
Lt. Col. Al Ridenhour USMC:

Infantry unit commander and instructor of unarmed combat, he is also a Guided Chaos Master. Security Manager, Assistant Operations Officer, and the Anti-Terrorism Force Protection Officer for the II Marine Expeditionary Force in Iraq. Worked with U.S. Customs Service and U.S. Border Patrol for the JTF-6 counter drug mission. Blitz magazine article on Guided Chaos Australia Seminar
"
Let me start by saying I thought I'd seen all that the world of 'reality-based self defence' had to offer, so for the easily bored out there, I'll cut to the chase. What I witnessed on the weekend of 26 and 27 March is the closest thing I've come across that resembles a modern-day, reality-based martial art and not just another 'combatives system'. Does it work? Hell, yeah! I got my arse well and truly kicked and at times felt like I was in the middle of a Jason Bourne fight scene."
--Clive Girdham, former Senshido and Geoff Thompson instructor [excerpted from the exclusive review of the Guided Chaos Australia Seminar in the Aug. print edition of BLITZ MAGAZINE: Australia's #1 Martial Arts magazine volume 25, issue 6

"Guided Chaos is the only training in my 15 plus years of Corrections that translates into real world application, period."
---Bob Miller, Corrections Officer at the largest facility in Oregon

"Guided Chaos is the only thing that has worked for me in real life situations. Unless you are 6'3" and 285 lbs of muscle, most of the Defensive Tactics stuff (ok all of the Defensive Tactics stuff) will get you hurt. And even if you are that big and strong, there is always someone bigger and stronger and there may be a lot of them. Nothing like dealing with one guy and it turns into a free for all with all his buddies. This is where you literally need to 'adapt or die' and Guided Chaos is the only training in my 15 plus years of Corrections that translates into real world application, period.
