WHAT DOES FLYING A HELICOPTER HAVE TO DO WITH CONTACT FLOW?

The following email exchange between one of our military members and 4th degree Ari Kandel reveals many insights that can help you in your Contact Flow training--even if you're not a chopper pilot!

Q: "How do I develop looseness and sensitivity?"
A: "You're already what most would consider a "master" at piloting vehicles. As far as I know, flying a chopper ain't the easiest thing in the world! You've got to subconsciously and relaxedly FEEL what the bird is doing in relation to the always changing air around it.

You've got to keep the aircraft BALANCED aerodynamically. (Note I've never flown anything beyond MS Flight Simulator, I'm just guessing here.) And you have to coordinate (while remaining relaxed, otherwise you'd never last a multi-hour mission) your whole body to do it--feet on the pedals, right hand on the stick, left hand on the collective, multiple switches on each, plus that funky stuff where even your eyes have to see different things and resolve them.

Everything needs to be able to operate independently, yet in coordination, with relaxation, feeling everything that's going on and adjusting everything at once accordingly to achieve balanced, coordinated flight and control.

You can't "muscle" the bird or FORCE it to do exactly what you want. You need to feel what it's doing and "nudge" it with subtleness in educated ways to make good things happen.

In this light, TOTAL parallel with GC. When you're doing contact flow, you can't muscle stuff and FORCE the situation to your will. You need to feel what's going on and adjust your body to "guide" the situation to the best resolution. You have to adjust your whole body with what you feel.

No matter how big your ego or how strong your muscles, the chopper doesn't care--the principles of aerodynamics are far stronger, and you must "yield" to them and work within them to bring about good results. Likewise with the principles of GC.

How did you learn to do all those things in the chopper? My guess is you worked a lot in the simulator, then did training flights and simply logged hours moving with the chopper as you gained a subconscious feel for how the chopper moves in any situation. Now you're able to fly NOE (Nap Of the Earth, i.e. really low) in formation, find targets and communicate while still flying the bird, evade enemies (yet another level of sensitivity and anticipation), and send Hellfires from several clicks away while getting it all on video, day or night in all sorts of conditions. And remain chill enough to deal with any emergency that comes up. How? Just by putting in the flight time moving with the chopper (plus learning the systems, tactics, etc.--separate for our purposes). GC contact flow is your flight time to learn to be as fluid and facile working with human bodies as you already are working with helicopters (and BMWs). Hope this helps. Take care!

INTERVIEW WITH BOB STASCH - A CHICAGO PD VETERAN OF 14 GUNFIGHTS

The following excerpts are from a ProArms podcast interview with Bob Stasch of the Chicago PD. Mr. Stasch has reviewed this material and approves of it as written.

Bob Stash has been with the Chicago PD since 1981, and he has been in 14 gunfights. When he began with the Chicago PD, qualifications were at 7, 15, and 25 yards, and mostly bullseye. A two handed Isosceles or Weaver stance was used. And there was no time pressure or combat shooting.

He is a firm believer in carrying a back up. But he has had to draw one only a couple of times, and he has not used one in a shootout.

In his first shooting, he and his partner each hit a perp multiple times. His initial shot was at about 12 feet, and his last two were at about 6 feet. His last shot blew out the perp's knee which finally brought him down. The perp later died from the multiple wounds. After that shooting, Bob and his partner trained to make head shots to better assure a quicker stop.

He practices shooting at combat distances [out to 20 - 25 feet], and tries to shoot exclusively with one hand to learn to control the weapon. In a gunfight, your off hand will be occupied doing something like pushing, opening a door, using the radio, etc..

He also said that standard range shooting positions are never acquired in combat. As to a combat crouch, he found himself almost sitting on his butt at times to get low, or behind something. He is not a big fan of aimed fire, nor is he a precision shooter. His shooting is instinctive shooting [like Point Shooting].

What you do, is point your finger at the target with your finger along the slide of the pistol. When the top of the gun is at eye level, and the eye, front sight or muzzle, and the target are in line, you will hit what you are aiming at.

He is a big fan of 6 inch paper plates. If he can hit them with regularity, he is certain that he can probably do that at combat distances. He also likes express sights.

In his second shooting, he and his partner were confronted by three perps. They both shot at and hit the closest of the three in the head. The other two perps took off, and were captured later.

The maximum gunfight shooting distance was maybe 20 to 25 feet. Most were under 12 feet. Only two gunfights occurred at distance [30 - 40 feet]. In those cases suppressive fire, not aimed fire was used.

He also has had to reload only 3 times. In those situations, suppressive fire was used.

In the 14 shootings, only two or three times was a two handed grip used.

He shoots about 300 rounds per month.

He says that gunfight experience gives you knowledge of what can happen, but they are never easy. When he shoots, he shoots to live. It is not easy to fire a gun at another human being. But just like a soldier in combat, first of all, it's your duty, to do that - if those in charge did not want you to do it, they wouldn't have issued you a gun in the first place, or had you carry it.

He has shot 9 people. Five of them died. Most perps are bad sorts, who if not stopped, would probably hurt/kill others.

Only one gunfight was a one shot stop event. The distance in that situation was about 4 - 5 inches.

His experiences are in line with the findings of the NYPD's SOP 9 study of thousands of police combat cases. Here is a link to a digest of the study and its results.

Blitz magazine article on Guided Chaos Australia Seminar
"
Let me start by saying I thought I'd seen all that the world of 'reality-based self defence' had to offer, so for the easily bored out there, I'll cut to the chase. What I witnessed on the weekend of 26 and 27 March is the closest thing I've come across that resembles a modern-day, reality-based martial art and not just another 'combatives system'. Does it work? Hell, yeah! I got my arse well and truly kicked and at times felt like I was in the middle of a Jason Bourne fight scene."
--Clive Girdham, former Senshido and Geoff Thompson instructor [excerpted from the exclusive review of the Guided Chaos Australia Seminar in the Aug. print edition of BLITZ MAGAZINE: Australia's #1 Martial Arts magazine volume 25, issue 6
