 GUIDED CHAOS TRAINING TIPS #86

MY TRIP TO NEW YORK
By Bob Miller
Corrections Officer, 2nd Degree GC Oregon

I wanted to take the time and write about my recent training trip to
NY
. These are my "take a ways" and I'm sure more will pour out as time goes on.  On the first training day I was assisting John in a private lesson. He was instructing an older gentleman in "interview" and "fright reaction" drills. The amazing part of this training session was that by the end of it, this older man was dropping when going into the fright reaction, and regaining his balance (I was hitting him pretty hard with the kicking shield) and attacking the attacker. I believe this is a testament to John's training style. Under his watchful eye and gentle correction this man was able to improve by leaps and bounds in this one lesson.

Then it was my turn. I worked with Bob, Mike, and Patrick. Whenever I go to
NY
to train I'm always a little nervous. I'm sure John knew this so he taught me combat boxing. If you know how to get loose and are not loose because you are nervous then combat boxing is the answer. You only get pounded so many times before you get loose or get broken. Since I've been home I've used this in my classes to help my guys get loose and vise versa. Also it is amazing to work with different people skilled in Guided Chaos. Each person has their own flavor; but the principles never change. An example when working with Bob is he uses what feels like more pressure or heavy hands like lead; but he is always where you don't want him to be and I was right where he wanted me to be.

Next we went to see Vince at the garage. This is where a major flaw in my own development was exposed. I had this habit of turning my head away and was getting hit with overhand rights one after the other. Vince pointed this out and John, Mike, Vince, and Patrick proceeded to work it out of me. I also learned to sink more into my root for better balance and mobility.

Now I will break down what I learned from the guys I worked with.

Ari- Feel the ground from your feet. All your strikes should generate from the ground. BTY Ari is like the elastic man from the fantastic 4.

Joe T. - If Ari is the elastic man Joe is the Thing (sorry Joe). He hits like a tank. Joe stressed the importance of doing the balance drills every day for five minutes. He also demonstrated how to take the balance of your opponent. This was an "ah ha" moment for me. If you want to know what it is you'll have to ask him yourself.

Kevin- I really enjoy working with Kevin he has more patience than anyone I know. We worked real slowly and he helped me tremendously.  I was also invited to a private lesson he had with Master Perkins and I learned the "whammy". You will have to ask John to show you that one.

Patrick- taught me some very cool variations on the vacuum walk and washing the body drills. My balance has already improved from doing them.

Gavin- taught me how to aim or use my shoulders, hips and feet before a strike to change angles. He also exposed a weakness in my movement and was able to take my balance every time, until he corrected me. He then worked with me until I was getting it right more than getting it wrong.

Andre- showed me medicine ball drill for shoulder and body looseness. Flowing with Andre reminds me of flowing with Lt. Col. Al. I can tell he takes his private lessons from Al and is very skilled.

Matt K. - Taught me to move off line more and to really work the push/pull pressure.  He is very skilled and I really appreciate the time after class he took to work with me.

Master Perkins- I learned a ton of stuff working and watching him work. I'm amazed every time I get to work with him. You cannot get the full experience of what he knows from the book and DVD's . Don't get me wrong you can get a good start from those training tools and they are worth every penny. It's just you have to go to
NY and have him lay hands on you for the full experience.

In closing I want to thank everyone I worked with and if I failed to mention you please forgive me. I also wanted to say that all these guys allowed me to get my work in so I could become more skilled. I would like to strongly suggest that you get to NY and train. You will not be disappointed.

Train Hard, Bob

PLEASE NOTE-- TYPO ON THE COMBAT CONDITIONING DVD:
