A QUESTION FROM US TO YOU...
As many of you may know, we have all our video clips on youtube as well as our website. On youtube however, they play instantly but at much lower quality. Our question is, do you find watching clips on our site annoying due to slow download speeds? Should we simply link all our photos to youtube (you may find yourself watching water-skiing squirrels afterwards but oh well)?

YOUR QUESTIONS:

Q: "How is eye gouging properly done in real  fights? When i tried it on a street thug who attacked me in a bar, i gouged his eyes but it just made him more angry and his attack more  vicious. It didn''t seem to hurt him even, just further enrage him.

A:   Apparently you did not actually gouge his eyes. The definition of gouge is to remove or scoop material from an object usually with a pointed object. To use the finger or thumb to remove part of the eye.

Gouging should only be done in case of immediate life or death situations.

To properly gouge the eyes a finger or thumb should be driven deeply into the eye socket causing the eyeball to hemorage or crush. Simply brushing your fingers over the eyes of an attacker will not stop him. Even during one chamionship fight in a mma contest one of the champions was accidentally scratched in the eye by the opponent which caused a 5 or 6 minute halt to the action.

A scratch to the eye will not suffice against a person who is under the influence of a narcotic or other pain numbing drug. A true crushing push into the eye socket will work.

If the situation is dire and must be ended instantly then a deep thrust of the finger deep into the eye socket and down past the occipital bone can be applied which will cause convulsions or death.

You can gouge simply by touching the head in the area of the face or side of the face and have your thumb or finger slide into the eye pushing quickly.

The Three Stooges type of eye poke is difficult to do because most people will flinch if an object from some distance is seen approaching the eye.

You can practice an eye poke/gouge by using a toy hockey mask and tape it to a striking mit. Here one can practice striking the facial area and sliding their finger or fingers into the holes in the mask. A training partner is needed for this. He can hold the target still while you practice striking to the eyes and he can move the mask around which would allow you to practice under more realistic conditions. The training partner could mimic high speed turning of the head similar to what some grapplers try to keep the fingers from scoring.

It is anathema to most human beings to thrust their fingers deeply into the eyes of another. This is why we caution not to get into a situation for any reason except where there is the threat of serious physical damage or death and no escape is available. I have used eye pokes and have even pushed my little finger into the corner of an attacker's eye which had a very definite effect an immediate shut down during a multiple attacker altercation.

Caution: Never push into a person's eye because they wish to show you how they can not be hurt by it. These  people are idiots. Usually macho men can't deal with the fact that they have any vulnerability so they will try to wish it away or bull #%% themselves or others. A person cannot build up the eyelid to ward off a serious poke or gouge. I have heard the story many times about how a poke to the eye only enraged an attacker. A serious poke is no joke. Don't be fooled by fools.

Good luck, JP

Q: John:
I am always looking for some effective stick techniques.  What you showed me this past January opened my eyes.  I was watching a documentary about the prison system regarding some of the prison gangs like the Aryan Brotherhood, and they showed a clip of 3 inmates attacking another with homemade knives.  The man was stabbed more than 28 times in less than 1 minute, and it was chilling.  Granted they were in a fenced exercise yard, and the one attacked had no where to run, but I realized if he had know how to roll and do the things attackproof teaches, he might have survived in time for help to arrive.   Hard to say, but they stabbed him like 3 enraged sewing machines using your turn of phrase on how to use a pen as a weapon.   In any case, I ran across this website showing some stuff from the book Cold Steel, and thought that this looked like excellent material.  I have seen some escrima demos, taken a Kali class or two ( not my cup of tea, as I don't have the patience for all that tappy tappy stuff), as well as a Japanese short bo demo, and thought nothing looks as effective as what I saw depicted on this page.  Maybe I'm missing something, but every move seems concise, functional and easy to execute, and would work with dropping energy.  What do you think?  Seems like some good stuff to add to what you taught me.  However, it seems that a cane without a crook, but a knob would be a better choice.  The company where I bought my cane makes a model with a knob. I think a cane with a knob on top would be better than one with a crook for the techniques shown?

A:  I know the techniques shown here. These are from basic CQC. I teach this to police officers. Of late I teach these same techniques using the collapsible asp baton. It works the same. I have found that the asp does not have much knock out power when striking with a whipping action to the head. It causes bleeding but that is about it. If you have nothing else it can be used against a knife but there is a lot of footwork that must be used so as not to get cut.

I showed these same techniques to the body guards of Jaques Chirac along with some far nastier stuff. They were grateful and picked up the movements quickly.

I believe that you remember the arm tuck position with the attendant drop strike to the front and the turning strike to the right and left. This is more dangerous and has far more striking power than the ones in your email. All are good to know, however.

The knob headed cane is the superior one to use for self defense. It allows for most of the mentioned techniques to work.

One good technique is the one where you hold the cane below the knob and practice the short drop strike to the bottom of the attacker's chin or the hook shot to the side of the head or the backhand strike to the head of an attacker who is attacking from the right rear.

The main key is to keep it simple. All of the techniques that are shown in the email you sent should be practiced with the drop step involved which adds needed power to the strikes displayed.

Take care, John Perkins

YOUR COMMENTS:
"...kids running around with their white robes and colored belts..."

"I placed an order from you and you were of the utmost assistance. The materials are tremendously helpful. Even our younger children are practicing with us. They feel safer--it adds to the safety courses they already attended. We are talking pre-teen. Thanks a lot.

...I have seen too many kids running around with their white robes and colored belts; totally self absorbed  with  their apparel and not their surroundings.   If people pay attention to just some of your suggestions, they and their kids would be safer. MY daughter of a proud 70 lbs.,asked me why the  girl that was grabbed by the arm and led away as advertised by the media a few years back- did not just pull out a pen or pencil and attack until the moment of release and escape, or drop to the ground and kick to the face screaming. So just one small thing among the many you mention can make a difference; it does take practicing this possible behavior to become reactive at the necessary moment; but with the proper knowledge and parent/tutor reinforcement; kids realize they have the power to self defend. And your program touches upon that. So thank you again.

...You realize some parents will put their small children in karate classes and then are horrified when a 120 point kata does not connect once in real life; because of lack of self confidence and misapplication. I am a full believer a child should use any force necessary to defend and escape a predator. As adults we have to worry about using excessive force. But for children involved in instances when they are in the process of  being abducted; it is war--- and unconventional methods are necessary."

to have some MMA fighters on also to dispel some of
the grappling myths. I did what you told me to do with my
huge training partner and it worked, he was falling into strikes
left and right.
