YOUR QUESTIONS: "Contact flow on the ground?" PART 1

"Forgive me for alluding to a Star Trek episode where the venerable Captain of the "Enterprise," Jean-Luc Picard, while under the mind-altering control of an alien foe is forced to relive a tactic he created, and which is studied at the Academy, against his own ship.  The first officer in exigency asks a crew mate to devise a defense strategy against this famous maneuver that will now be used against them.

Okay, here's where I'll tie together a parallel -- a member on my Ambulance squad is a police officer and was recently put on disability for a skirmish she had when she and her partner answered a domestic dispute call.  (She is 5' 10" and approximately 170 lb.)  Three officers were on the scene and subdued the husband; and as is usually the case in a domestic dispute, the wife turned on the remaining two officers.  They eventually, and with great difficulty I'm told, restrained and cuffed the wife but then shortly after she began kicking at them, got on her back (while still handcuffed mind you) and kept the two officers at bay as she began to flail, and push her legs at them.  I grinned as I urged the female officer as a matter of my own personal research to continue her story.

The female officer's partner (a Judoka and kickboxer <g>) timed a belly-flop onto the cuffed assailant in what amounted to a side mount.  Picturing all of this in my mind I asked, "Didn't the wife bite him?"  And she predictably replied, "Yes."  Well, to shorten this story to its ultimate conclusion both officers ended up both belly-flopping on the assailant and on the way bruised their knees and other parts of their respective anatomy.

There is a defensive tactics technique I learned a couple of years ago (again fashioned during the BJJ rage) that involved "Leg control for Law Enforcement."  I tested it on an MMA practitioner who was keeping me at bay with his legs and it worked.  Granted, it was in a controlled environment and he was in "grappling" mode.  He had no weapon in his hands and he wasn't "ground-fighting."  (A DT espousing what I attached for your eye-rolling and snickering would get severely hurt against an adept ground-fighter, especially since he's giving away his balance.)

The foregoing incident is timely since it occurred a week after our last Ground Fighting seminar.  I thought about what the officers could have done differently.  My first thought was coordinating a distraction as one officer approached the wife's legs, the other approached from her head.  After all, the assailant was handcuffed

I went to sleep the other night and in lieu of counting sheep I thought about this further and then it came to me--What about the contact flow we do on the ground as part of the ground-fighting regimen?  Presuming the scene is secured, your partner is spotting you, the assailant is cuffed <g> (or not), couldn't one of the officers use the principles of KCD ground-fighting against the ground- fighting assailant?  (Assuming the LEO was trained in this?)"
--Steve

ANSWER...

Hi Steve,

There are a number of conditions I don't know in this situation. Was the handcuffed woman cornered? If so it makes it more difficult to approach. If she is in an open area then distraction could work. No matter what, the LEOs must realize that they will most likely have to injure the prisoner to get further control.

One way is to do what Kimura did to one of the Gracies who was on the ground using his legs to keep Kimura away. (I believe it was Kimura) Anyway, the Japanese man simply drop kicked Gracies legs from a distance causing some injury. If a LEO has on some sturdy low boots this could really wreak havoc on the handcuffed woman. The LEO must stay far enough away so as not to get tripped. He must kick quickly and step backward as fast as possible and then repeat until the prisoner gives up. If the prisoner knows how to do the most basic native techniques it would be more difficult to do this without injury to the LEO.

Usually mace or pepper spray is used to submit a prisoner. I have seen this also fail many times.

Even if they got the woman on her feet they would have to be careful not to get kicked or let her drop to the ground again. This is where numbers come in handy. With enough men (4 or more) the police could or should carry the woman prisoner to the car. In some of the cases I worked on personally we tied or shackled the bad guy's legs together.

I know of one case where a handcuffed Capoiera master broke the back of a prison guard while they struggled to get him out of the back of the prisoner van. I knew the bad guy personally and had a short fight with him myself a couple of years before the incident.

Remember:  a serious or drugged or delusional antagonist is often inured to pain so regular compliance does not work. Too bad the choke hold is illegal for police officers to use. It worked fine many times for me. There is always the risk that the bad guy could die if his blood vessels collapse or due to extreme chaos his neck or throat is broken.

Imagine being a police officer these days when the delusional P.C. mobs in America can't wait to take down men who are trying to do a difficult and important job.

Of course if your life is on the line, I believe that anything goes.

Confusing isn't it?

All the best, John
