   NEW VIDEO POSTED:
"Why Lethal Striking Alone Is Not Enough To Save Your Life"

Lt Col Al explains Contact Flow vs. Combat Flow vs. World War II Combatives and why no one is going to just LET you hit them; why you must defend and attack simultaneously while continuously adapting to your attacker.

Lethal target striking by itself only works with a non-resisting opponent. Training this way traps you in an unrealistic cycle of pattern fixation. With real violence, the criminal is going to be resisting with all his might while simultaneously trying to maim or kill you. Authentic WW II Combatives gives you the tools; Guided Chaos training shows you how to use them.

The key to becoming Adaptive is combining internal sensitivity principles from authentic internal arts (tai chi, bagua, etc) with hard core Combatives. Guided Chaos provides an extremely rapid way to learn this.

  YOUR QUESTIONS...

DROPPING ENERGY AND BOXING

Q: I am an amatuer boxer and is curious about dropping
energy to increase the power of my blows. My question, are the techniques
easy to learn, are they applicable or even safe for boxing and what dvd
should I purchase that teaches it? I'm a law enforcement officer
also, are these techniques applicable away from the competition ring to
the real world life or death situations in the street

A: There is no great mystery to dropping; in fact some top boxers do it
already though perhaps not consciously. Jack Dempsey used a crude form of
it and Ali used it when he knocked out Liston.

It involves loosely and rapidly dropping your body weight along with a
root change so that you catch the rebound of your momentum bouncing back
up through your body and out your fist. The exact opposite of this would
be "arm punching" or generating power strictly with your triceps and back
muscles. Dropping is a further extension of the old adage to "punch from
your feet" by additionally snapping your weight off the canvas plyometrically.

Dropping is very useful for real life violence and hitting nose-to-nose
because it generates power without chambering or a windup.

The Companion 1 DVD explains dropping fully. Hope this helps.

WHEN AND HOW TO TEACH CHILDREN GUIDED CHAOS

Q: I've a question about GC I hoped you might help me with.

I am father of young girl - only four years old - and, who knows,
there may be another one a bit further down the track. When my
daughter was born, like many fathers do I suppose, it got me thinking
about the things I might do for the kid as she's grows up. There are
some things I'm good at, so of course I can pass some of that on, but
there are also things that I'm not good at, and of the latter category
I certainly I wish I'd learnt self-defence because that knowledge and
ability, when I thought about it, is surely the most precious thing a
father could give to his daughter or son.

It's against my nature, however, to just want to put my daughter in
someone else's hands. I knew if she is going to learn self-defence,
well I needed to pull my finger out and begin working on the same
thing. Not having much of a clue about it though, I've spent a fair
bit of time, up to now, investigating various approaches to self-
defense and martial art forms, until my search stopped with GC. I'm
adament that this is what and how I want her to learn to protect
herself.

Since coming across GC and watching the little one grow through her
early years it's always been on my mind - I've often talked to my wife
and friends about it - but I haven't found or made much opportunity
for myself to get on with the business of working at it. That's about
to change though, as I'm getting able to make more room in my life to
approach it more seriously, and as I do I want to include my daughter
in the process.

Clearly, she's still very young at the moment, so including her
probably needs to happen later on. But my question is, or what I'm
wondering is, what you folk at GC think about kids learning it? How
young to start them? What to start them doing? What I should be
focusing on myself to do a better job by her? Your advice and
perspective would be very much appreciated. Funnily enough, she love's
a bit of  rough and tumble and wrestling with her old man, and I
sometimes play the awareness games with her, which are suggested in
the Attack Proof book. I'm Australian (albeit residing in Japan), but
one day I'll take her to the US and get some proper lessons from you
guys. All the same, I'm thinking there must be others of you who've
gone down this path with your kids (I know Perkins Dad taught him what
he knew!) and perhaps I can discover something out of your experiences
that will help me help her in the mean time - if you'd be willing to
share, that is.

A: First advice:

Patrick wrote up some good advice about training young kids. Not sure
how he pulled such good info out of his ass b/c he has no kids, but
it's great advice nonetheless!

I have a daughter about to turn 3 and a son about to be born.
Incidentally, I got serious about weapons training only after my
daughter was born. I suppose I was willing to roll the dice a bit for
myself and my wife with unarmed self-defense, but when I met my little
girl, I felt a need to stack the odds steeply in our favor should I
ever need to protect her (either directly or by making sure I get home
to her).

First, get your mind right and do the exercises. If you can link up
with any like-minded enthusiasts to train (I know there are, or at
least were, some in Japan), all the better. But if you can't find
anyone, don't use that as an excuse to not do anything. Work the
exercises and, depending on your relationship, maybe enlist your wife
as a training partner. Sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn't.
Incidentally, if your wife is like-minded, it's always better to have
TWO parents trained, ready and willing to protect the kids (and each
other).

As for the kids, as Patrick writes, make up fun games to develop their
balance, looseness, sensitivity, body unity and freedom of action from
an early age. My daughter loves wobble boarding on styrofoam half-
rollers (check Yoga/Pilates supply stores online--it's a 6" diameter
foam cylinder split in half so that one side is round and the other
flat--you and/or the kid stands on the flat side--google "foam half-
roller"), it's part of our "dancing" together. Get the kids involved
in swimming and gymnastics as young as possible to develop their body
awareness, comfort in any position, and "internal gyroscope". Make
sure you react to their falls, bumps and bruises calmly and with a
smile, saying "you're okay," rather than getting overly concerned/
panicked/sad. (If there's a real injury, obviously, take care of it.)

I don't know whether this is a universal thing, but my daughter from
the earliest age was a big eye-gouger. Hand her a new doll and the
first thing she'll do is claw the eyes. Her ground kicking is already
deadly (well almost). While obviously you don't want her to throw
violent tantrums and such behavior must be corrected, when she hits
(slaps) or kicks me in play (i.e. with a smile/laugh), I may ask her
to "pat, not hit" so that she'll do it gentler, but I don't scold or
stop the behavior. So far we've had absolutely no incidents of her
being at all violent with other kids.

She loves jumping off the couch into my arms, being thrown onto the
couch, running and jumping and dancing. Today she wanted me to teach
her how to do shoulder rolls after watching me practicing some slow
groundfighting. She hasn't picked it up yet but that will come with
time. Being enthusiastic about creative physical movement is healthy
for future GC and life in general.

She's observed a couple GC classes (while playing on the side of the
room) and private lessons. I hope to do more of that so that she
remains comfortable seeing such things.

I won't force her into martial arts training if she's not interested.
As of now, ballet seems to interest her most. However, probably before
she hits teenaged years, I'll definitely work to get her mind right
and teach her (or have someone else teach her--often works better)
some basic stuff to keep herself safe.

Lt. Col. Al, BTW, played balance and fighting games with his son as he
grew up, and his son also "played" with John and attended some
classes. He ended up a force to be reckoned with, not only in combat
but also in football and basketball, despite his "small" size
(relative to many of the other players--he's actually bigger than Al).
Genetics MAY have had something to do with it too (him mom was a
college track star).

Hope this helps a bit. Most important is:

a) ENJOY as much play time with her as you can,
b) Encourage and enhance physical exploration,
c) When she gets to the appropriate age (varies by kid), make sure her
mind is right.
