Subject: Merry Christmas Secret Sale!

Happy Holidays!
Don't Miss the Secret Sale!

We love this time of year, as it seems to draw a lot of old regulars out of the woodwork that maybe have moved away or don’t currently have pets and are holiday shopping for their friends. We love to reconnect with these friendly faces who choose to come on in and support our store when they can. We also meet a lot of nice folks that have never been to the store and are out exploring while they’re Christmas shopping. If you’re one of these folks, we’re so happy to meet you! If you’re new to the newsletter list, it’s a great time to join, as we do have Secret Sales just for you, and there's one this weekend! It’s a fun way to say a special thank you to our regular customers. Please join us Saturday December 16th from 10-6 and take 15% off of all regularly priced items that aren’t pet food (stuff you’d put in a bowl at dinner). This means all beds, leashes, collars, supplements, cat trees, bowls, coats, sweaters, and most importantly during the holidays: toys, treats and chews are all on sale! The trick with Secret Sales is that they’re a secret that only newsletter subscribers now about! The person at the register won’t ask you if you know about the sale, and you might be charged full price if you don’t mention the sale (or give us a wink and nod to let us know you’re in on the secret!) You're more than welcome to bring friends to the sale - if they sign up for the newsletter, they can have the discount as well! Thank you for your support this year - we hope this helps to save you some money during the holiday season!

Santa Paws and Pongo Fund Food Drive!

We'd like to thank everyone that came out for Santa Paws photos - thanks to you we raised $431 for the Pongo Fund’s Emergency Medical Fund! See the photos here

Santa Paws is how we kick off our annual Pongo Fund Food drive, which is going on through the whole month of December! Here’s how it works: You add the cost of a 33# bag of Nutrisource Chicken and Rice ($34.99 our cost - no profit made by us) to your purchase at the register and at the end of the month, we’ll make a big order and have it delivered right to the Pongo Fund Pet Food Bank Warehouse. This food will go far to help keep dogs with their families when their people are challenged to find food for themselves, keeping more dogs with the people they love and out of the shelters! Thanks to Nutrisource and our Distributor, Animal Supply, for every 12 bags purchased, 3 more will be added. Lets make it really add up! Each person that purchases food for Pongo will be entered in a drawing (one entry for each bag you buy) for a $25 gift certificate! Please read more about the amazing Pongo Fund and all the ways they help low income and homeless pet owners here.
Gift Guide!
Check out our Favorite Cat Products (besides our very big collection of fabulous handmade, sustainable and locally made cat toys!):
Brain Games for Cats

Pet owners often understand that dogs need physical exercise and mental challenges in their lives or they can develop behavioral problems, but many people think that cats need nothing in their lives but a food and water bowl. Cats are smart animals, and they too need stimulation, interaction, exercise and novelty in their lives. Keeping cats indoors is the right thing to do for their safety and to protect wildlife, but these predators can become very very bored indoors if people aren’t making an effort to provide interesting things to do to get them moving, thinking, and involved in simulated hunting. Often an annoying or destructive cat is just a really bored cat! This book provides good ideas for simple ways to make a cat’s life more active and fun.

Ripple Rug!

Speaking of creating enriching fun playtime for cats, this product is fabulous easy way to stimulate play and exploration! It consists of a bottom rug that has an insulating rubber bottom that makes it warm to lie on and prevents slipping. The top rug is bendable and floppy with 14 differently sized holes in it. There are 13 tabs of Velcro on the underside that let you change the shape of the “ripples” in the rug. Rearranging the rug is a fun time in itself - cats have to check out what you’re doing and often dive in while you’re arranging it. It’s a great place to play in and around. Your wand toys become far more fun when the toy is able to shoot into a tunnel, peek out through a hole, and “run” around through the shapes that the rug makes. When you’re not around to play with them, hiding other little toys inside makes a fun time when they can reach in and get the toy like they would do if hunting a mouse in its hole, and stashing a few treats inside also rewards exploration. This would be the most amazing toy for kittens and adolescent cats, but 16 year old Otis loves to chase toys around the ripples, he loves to scratch it (though it’s amazingly never shown any damage), and he finds great napping spots in the changing nooks we create with the ripples. It folds up nicely if you need to put it away when company comes. Even better, the Ripple Rug is made in the USA using 100% recycled materials with no VOCs. Each Ripple Rug keeps 24 plastic bottles out of the landfill or floating in the ocean! Check out this great video
Kitty Block

Don't miss out on what we think are the greatest items in the store for cats! Very few things available in the market for cats are as universally loved by them as the Kitty Block. It looks so simple but it’s a great value compared to other kinds of cat furniture. There are a few troubles with other cat furniture: The shape cannot be changed when they grow bored with it, they may not like the scratching surfaces you’ve chosen, and when those that do like it have destroyed the scratching surfaces, the furniture cannot be recycled.
Cats do seem to love corrugated cardboard - it’s insulating, they can scratch it, and when it’s as solid and sturdy as these are, it creates a secure spot to sleep in and play on. Otis loves these like no other product, in fact all cats seem drawn to them like magnets. We have a stack of two in the living room, and not only does it look pretty cool for cat furniture, he sleeps both inside it and on top (that's him on the left). They’re sturdy - he can jump onto the top one without it wobbling, and a two-stack would be a great height to put under a window. He loves to scratch it so much, both inside and out - it was the one product that really worked to switch him off of wanting to scratch furniture or carpets when we first brought him home, and he remains incredibly loyal to them as scratchers. They’re solid, so it takes him quite a bit of scratching before we feel like it has to be replaced (especially because you can flip and turn them), but instead of recycling them, we bring them to the basement TV room and use it as objects to play around. They stack out of the way when we’re not using them, and we can take them out and use them in our playtime with him, making tunnels and obstacles to chase the wand toys around. The best thing is, when it is finally time to retire them, you can easily recycle them! Check out the mega stack in the photo that one customer has made for her two kittens!
Fun Gift Ideas for Dogs and People:
Foobler

This is such an innovative product! It’s hard to keep dogs busy when the weather is bad, and even harder to keep dogs entertained when they’re home alone for a long stretch of time. This amazing, sturdy feeder toy can get them off the couch and engaged in a task regularly over a period of up to 9 hours. Here’s how it works: six chambers hold up to a total of 2 cups of kibble or little treats. A battery powered motor that is set on a timer moves the chambers every 15, 30, 60, or 90 minutes (your choice) to allow the dog access to its contents. When they hear the chiming bell, they can then roll it around to get the treats/kibble to fall out. We have a sample to show you how it works - come check it out!
Gourmet Pup Christmas Cookies!

These wonderful cookies have all the attributes we love. They're locally made made in Oregon with organic spelt (wheat free!) and organic peanut butter, and they're beautifully colorful using only fruits, vegetables, charcoal and flowers! Available in a variety of sizes.
Pawprints Ornament

This makes a nice gift for dog and cat owners alike. This simple no-mess kit requires no mixing or baking and creates a lovely keepsake ornament for the tree!

Scoop The Poop Yard Sign!

This is a fantastic gift for any homeowner - If you're on Next Door you know how much chatter is devoted to poop in the yard topics! These tasteful, polite 9" signs are made in Washington using materials that are fully waterproof, UV resistant and mounted on heavy duty aluminum - think street sign durability. They come with a pre-drilled hole at the top so you can choose to hammer them onto a tree or fence post, or attach them to a simple stake for the lawn.
Gifty Gifts!

We brought in a selection of locally made gifts that are just the thing for other pet lovers in your life. There are fun mugs, "Pet Rescue Floats My Boat" totes, cute keychains, stickers  and magnets, most of which were designed right here in Beaumont Village!
Pumpkin Spice Latte and Eggnog for Pets!

Sounds silly, but these are made by Honest Kitchen, and so the ingredients are fabulous! Dehydrated Goat Milk, Dehydrated pumpkin, dehydrated honey, cinnamon and ginger make up the Pumpkin Spice Latte, and dehydrated goat’s milk, honey, eggs, and cinnamon make up the eggnog - mix a little of these with some hot (not boiling) water and you have a nourishing, warming whole food treat that can be served on its own or poured over kibble to add deliciousness. These make a perfect Seasonal Gift or Stocking Stuffer! You can be sure of the quality when it comes from Honest Kitchen, as they use truly human grade ingredients and make their products in a human food production facility.
Holiday Collars!

There are still some beautiful, locally handmade seasonal collars left - don't let those holiday family photos happen without a little festive bling for the dogs!
Green Tip

Check out the latest post on the Green Dog Blog! We created it hoping to offer you some good suggestions for how to keep the extra waste generated during the holidays (and mess on Christmas morning) in check! (The secret involves elves). There's also an explanation of why certain materials can't go in compost/recycling and what can.

Hopefully Helpful Blog Tip: I've been working to make sure that useful blog posts are updated into our "Articles" section of the website, organized by category. The Blog's search engine isn't very user friendly, so I'm hoping that the articles tab on the front page makes it easier to browse topics. Check it out

New Wellness Center - You know that big bright orange building across the street from our store? It's being turned into a new Wellness Center. They say, "The space is a 2600 sq ft wellness and community center. Everything will be fully refurbished with wood floors, new ceilings, freshly painted walls, new bathroom, etc. There are 5 treatment rooms, a private practitioner area w/ kitchen, laundry, and space to relax/do chart notes, large open waiting room area, and a 700 sq ft yoga and pilates studio that will also function as a classroom and event space. The entire space is bright with tons of windows and good sized treatment rooms. We are creating a new type of community center that focuses on supporting the individuals in the community in their health while also creating space for our community to gather. Right now we are in need of both yoga, pilates, or other movement class instructors. Also open to tai chi, qigong, or other ideas for weekly classes."
