It's Halloween At Green Dog!
Well, it looks like the seasonal switch has been officially flipped, and we're solidly into Fall. You'll have to come check out our cute Halloween display! We have many hilarious toys, including squeaky bloody knives (a good doggie photo-op), mythical creatures and (stuffed) Headstones with glow-in-the-dark ghosts rising up from their graves (all of which are made by a B Corp company, which means they’re committed to sustainable practices on all levels).
We have some fantastic frosted wheat free Halloween Cookies that are made locally with organic ingredients. their frostings are even colored with foods (orange is from carrot powder, yellow is turmeric, etc). The big ones (4 1/2") come in jack-o-lantern, ghosts, and Candy Corn, and there's a 3pk of small cookies too (1 1/2"). Another ghoulish delight is a bag of eyeballs! They’re really actually eyeballs: they are dehydrated eyes from Asian Carp, an invasive species of fish that seriously threatens the ecosystem of the Great Lakes. It's critically important to remove as many of these fish from our rivers, and it's good that companies like these are using every part. A single ingredient treat with no additives or fillers, eyeballs are actually a nutritional powerhouse loaded with protein and DHA, which is a fabulous supplement for all dogs but a must for puppies!
We didn’t order a ton of merchandise for Halloween as we weren’t sure with this weird Covid time whether people were going to be as interested in holiday toys as they might in a regular year. So, consider this an inside tip - if you’re interested in these things, you might want to come sooner than later. I’ll be posting photos on social media after I send you the newsletter, for those of you that like to do curbside!

| | NEW LOTUS RAW CAT FOOD!
We still feel heartsick about the disappearance of Rad Cat raw foods. They were truly the best cat food ever made, with thoughtfully crafted recipes and exacting standards for safety and sourcing. The FDA really did a number on them, seemingly trying to force them out of business, and they were successful if that was their intent. Raw food truly gets a raw deal when it comes to the FDA, who have obviously discontinued all testing for salmonella in kibble (which is where all of the serious and frequent safety recalls have typically occurred, complete with sicknesses and deaths) and instituting a zero tolerance policy for salmonella in raw foods (with rarely a recall). I would have gladly put Otis’ raw venison Rad Cat in my mouth to show you how much I trusted their safety protocols.
Anyway, Lotus has come to fill the gap, seemingly replicating the Rad Cat recipe with few changes. Lotus ingredient panels, (like Rad Cat) use no bone (substituting egg shell for calcium). They use gelatin for its valuable collagen and amino acids, and they add some sources of fiber. There’s nothing wrong with bone, butthis gentle recipe is well suited for both young animals and and also for seniors who may be compromised in some way (very useful for IBD and kidney and thyroid issues). They also have used humanely sourced meats, are very palatable, and they even have a frequent buyer card! We've brought in several flavors in 16oz and 24oz tubs.

| | Nuggets Bone Broth Jerky!
It’s fun to find treats that make dogs’ eyes widen and their butts hit the floor.

We thought we’d highlight one of our favorite chews for those of you that might not have tried them before. Honest Kitchen makes a dehydrated fish skin chew that’s super safe and delicious. Made with MSC certified fish, these chews come in two lengths, but you can cut any of them to smaller sizes with kitchen shears. We at Green Dog understand that certain behavioral problems are frustrating and feel difficult to fix, but there are positive methods that often work better than the use of discomfort and force. In my 30 years of positive reinforcement training experience with a variety of species from cats and dogs to orangutans and rhinos, I feel confident that you can address any behavior with positive methods, especially those that are a result of fear or anxiety. I’m also certain that more forceful methods can make these behaviors spiral out of control. Halloween Fun! The Beaumont Business Association has planned a fun, socially distanced activity for Halloween that includes candy!. They will have a scary backdrop set up in The Arrangement parking lot, where people will take their own photos and tag businesses (Tag Green Dog!) and the BBA. There will be a great prize for best photo (tagging businesses will be essential to win). At this same location, from 3-5pm, we will set up pre-made bags of Halloween candy on hooks and kids will take one. A couple of volunteers will continually restock.
